Location of local.cf?
I previously asked my host this, but I wasn't able get a straight answer.
They've already told me that I CAN use my own custom local.cf file. I wrote asking WHERE SA expected to find the file. In my original message to them, I asked if I need to put it in /home/username/.spamassassin/ and the reply came back "yes, put it in /home/username/".
So I asked them which one was right.
Here's the reply:
It goes here:
root@server125 [/home/username/.spamassassin]# ls
/ ../ auto-whitelist user_prefs
Can anyone help me figure out where to put this file?
This is a shared hosting account.
Thanks!
Don Ireland

Generally speaking, as a normal "user" of bayes, these features are
beyond your control.
The system admin sets it up for site-wide, or per-user (which is the
default!). So they've gone out of their way to make it so you can't have
your own bayes.

Now I'm really confused. What I'd like to accomplish is:
1) To have my own Bayes files. Because I don't want the the fact that someone else identified something as spam to get something similar tagged in MY account as spam. And likewise, I don't want the fact that someone else identified something as ham to get something similar tagged in MY account as ham.
2) Be able to add custom rules if I feel the need because I start receiving a lot of a certain type of SPAM.
Also, I forgot about this message. When I first asked my host about SA, I recieved this message.
*/To customize spamassassin edit the config file. The config file is $HOME/.spamassassin/user_prefs
You can also use a local.cf file in the .spamassassin dir.

Local.cf lives in /etc/mail/spamassassin, /etc/spamassassin or
equivalent directory.
This is a SYSTEM WIDE configuration file, it does NOT live in any home
directory.

Odds are you only have access to a user_prefs. That's it.
Depending on how they're configured, you might be able to declare rules
here.
Generally you can declare white/blacklists, adjust rule scores, tag
format and tag thresholds without any special permissions. However the
ISP has to enable allow_user_rules at the system level to allow that.
