Patch for JCR-1087

Hi all,

Issue https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/JCR-1087 gives us quite
serious practical problems. Last week I attached a patch for it and we'd
like to start using it in production. Before setting it loose in the
wild, however, it would be great if someone else could have a look at it
:)
