ODPi reference implementation and validation testsuite are all based on Bigtop. For the past two releases we haven't had a chance to push what makes sense back to the Bigtop community. I propose that we do that now. A rough outline of the changes can be seen here:

Now, I'm not suggesting that we need to merge it as-is, but rather consider it to be a branch. In fact, I think it would be super useful to actually have it as a branch in Bigtop's repo and keep refactoring until we feel it is a good fit.
