#1 is fixed in svn and will be in ant 1.7.
Thanks for the report.

I am not too sure about #2.

For example:
<a>
  <b>
    <c>value</c>
    <d/>
  </b>
</a>
a.b.c is "value"
a.b.d is ""

What is the value of a.b? and a ?

I will leave this bug open at the moment.
