Something is messed with this parsing on AIX. We have serveral reports of
this. If someone can replicate it, it would be nice...

I've successfully passed the 3 steps of the V1.3.0 Apache's installation :
./configure --prefix=/usr/local/bin/apache
make
make install
As said at the end of the installation phasis, i've tried to test my server by
first checking my configuration files - it's OK ! - and then sending the
command :
/usr/local/bin/apache/sbin/apachectl start
at that time, i've got the error message :
Syntax error on line 23 of /usr/local/bin/apache/etc/access.conf:
Expected </Directory> but saw </Directory>
/usr/local/bin/apache/sbin/apachectl start: httpd could not be started
The starter finds an error on something right, the saw is exactly the same
that the expected !!
I've first commented the pair <Directory /> ... </Directory> found at line 23
but the same error has been deplaced at line 53, then i've checked the good
number of that pair, it's Ok.
Finally, i've checked the file's right and used the 'access.conf.default'
file without anymore success.

Let me try this again...
This seems to be a problem with xlC.rte V3.6.0.0. Earlier versions (at
least the ones I've tested) do not have the problem. There have been some
compiler optimization bugs reported on V3.6. We'll do some testing when
the 3.6 update is released.

Yerk. I think that should be
if (strncasecmp(cmd->cmd->name, cmd->end_token,
strlen(cmd->end_token))) {
unless both are already case-normalised (in which strncmp() is
the way to go). (*I* haven't checked *that*.)

Yes, I looked at it a while back (and modified it :-( ) but I kept the
logics. FWIW, I think the code's correct.

Yea, I guess it should work, especially since there are no other
/Directory strings anywhere in the source, so it looks like it could be a
compiler bug. It would be useful to see just what the values of the two
pointers are andtrace where they come from. Doesn't cause a problem with
cc on the AIX 4.1.mumble system I tried.
I'm not sure I understand the logic behind doing things this way; the 15
instructions at config time don't seem overly worth saving, but I guess
it isn't a bad thing.
I wondered if the code was written to allow it, but then I thought "no,
dean wasn't messing with that bit of the code was he...". Forgot you did.

This comparison is deliberate, and was correct when I wrote it a few
months back.
If you study the code you'll see that it's carefully arranged so that only
a pointer comparison is necessary... look for "end_directory_section" for
example.
I admit, it could use a comment for folks not used to this sort of thing.

Thanks.
Note that this may be Apache's fault and isn't necessarily a bug in
the compiler.
Hmm. Looking at the code... wtf. This code looks way bogus to me.
It does:
static const char *end_nested_section(cmd_parms *cmd, void *dummy)
{
if (cmd->end_token == NULL) {
return ap_pstrcat(cmd->pool, cmd->cmd->name,
" without matching <", cmd->cmd->name + 2, " section", NULL);
}
if (cmd->cmd->name != cmd->end_token) {
return ap_pstrcat(cmd->pool, "Expected ", cmd->end_token, " but saw ",
cmd->cmd->name, NULL);
}
return cmd->end_token;
}
Note the comparison between cmd->cmd->name and cmd->end_token.
Me thinks that should be a strcmp or strncmp (haven't looked to
see which). What is happening is that other compilers end up
optimizing things so both references to </Directory> occupy the
same memory, while this one, for whatever reason, doesn't.

Looks like there may be a problem with the xlC compiler or runtime library. A
member of our team (shaneo@us.ibm.com) has been able to recreate the problem with
the following setup. Here is the note he just sent to me:
---------------
I have been able to reproduce the problem.
Here is my setup:
Apache 1.3.2-dev ( from July 22 CVS )
AIX 4.1.5
xlC.cpp 3.1.1.0 C C for AIX Preprocessor
xlC.msg.en_US.cpp 3.1.1.0 C C for AIX Preprocessor Messages en_US
xlC.msg.en_US.rte 3.6.0.0 C C Set ++ for AIX Application Runtime
Messages en_US
xlC.rte 3.6.0.0 C C Set ++ for AIX Application
and
gcc version 2.7.2.2
Here was the process followed for each test:
./configure --prefix=/tmp/wed1
make
make install
/tmp/wed1/sbin/apchectl start
I installed them into different dir's ( gcc wed1 and xlC_r wed4 )
after the "apachctl start" Apache compiled with gcc worked fine BUT when I
compiled with xlC_r following the same process the following error occurred:
(cdspace)/tmp/wed4/sbin% apachectl start
Syntax error on line 23 of /tmp/wed4/etc/apache/access.conf:
Expected </Directory> but saw </Directory>
././apachectl start: httpd could not be started
(cdspace)/tmp/wed4/sbin%
I did a diff on the 2 access.conf's and they are exactly the same ( except the
paths which was expected ;-) So the only variable was the compiler. In other
words the same version of sed-awk and all other sys utils that could be used in
the process were the same.
--------------
We'll follow-up with the xlC compiler folks to see if this problem is isolated to
this particular version and if a fix is available.

Hmm, just tried it on an AIX box; (with commercial ANSI-C) and cannot
replicate it. I'll see if I can find the CD with the origianl el-cheapo
compiler which came with it.
