nightly builds?
Are there nightly builds for core / client available anywhere?

Gump is particularly unpredictable, because it builds against the
latest versions of everything (not just HttpClient). But that is the
whole point of Gump.
AIUI Continuum only builds the latest of the current project; external
dependencies are fixed. Likewise Hudson. They are thus slightly more
controlled.

people.a.o and publish on http://people.apache.org/builds/...

There are no nightly builds at the moment. However, I usually publish
the latest snapshot to the Apache Maven snapshot repository every time I
close a major issue.

If you are not using Maven, there is currently no way around pulling the
latest source code out of SVN trunk and building the packages manually.
