[users@httpd] Problems with Apache soaking up 50% CPU while idle ...

I'm having trouble with Apache using up about 50% of the CPU time all the
time while (mostly) idle.

This is apache+mod_ssl-1.3.31+2.8.1 installed from FreeBSD ports system
on FreeBSD 4.10-RELEASE-p2.

Additionally, I get this in the error log:
[Sun Sep 12 15:49:22 2004] [error] (2)No such file or directory: No such file or directory
This log entry will occur 4 times every 90 seconds.

Of the processes started when Apache is started, only one is actually
using up significant CPU, I ran ktrace on it to see what was going on.

Part of the problem seems to be this:
 26123 httpd CALL read(0x1,0xbfbff848,0x128)
26123 httpd RET read -1 errno 9 Bad file descriptor
 26123 httpd CALL select(0x5,0xbfbff9b0,0,0,0)
 26123 httpd RET select 1
 26123 httpd CALL read(0x1,0xbfbff848,0x128)
26123 httpd RET read -1 errno 9 Bad file descriptor
 26123 httpd CALL select(0x5,0xbfbff9b0,0,0,0)

It's repeated over and over and over ... endlessly ...

It appears as if the errors in the error log are created by this
activity:

 26123 httpd NAMI "/usr/local/logs//bucket.localhost.klearblue.net"
26123 httpd RET unlink -1 errno 2 No such file or directory
 26123 httpd CALL stat(0x818ad28,0xbfbff444)
 26123 httpd NAMI "/usr/local/logs//bucket.localhost.klearblue.net"
26123 httpd RET stat -1 errno 2 No such file or directory
 26123 httpd CALL open(0x818ad28,0x202,0x1b4)
 26123 httpd NAMI "/usr/local/logs//bucket.localhost.klearblue.net"
26123 httpd RET open -1 errno 2 No such file or directory
 26123 httpd CALL gettimeofday(0xbfbfb46c,0)
 26123 httpd RET gettimeofday 0
 26123 httpd CALL write(0xf,0x80e6000,0x5b)
26123 httpd GIO fd 15 wrote 91 bytes
"[Sun Sep 12 15:49:22 2004] [error] (2)No such file or directory: No su\
	ch file or directory
       "
This is repeated for each virtualhost in the config. I can't find any
reference to "/usr/local/logs", or "bucket" in the config file, anywhere.

Any thoughts as to what may be causing this?
