Las Vegas JUG Summary

Hi, Last night I was fortunate to be able to present Geronimo to the Las Vegas
Java Users Group (JUG). It was held not in a casino but in the Gordon Biersch
Brewery. There were about 30 people in attendance and I understand that
accounted for fully 25-33% of the development community in Las Vegas, so the
turnout was very good and I was elated. But to summarize:

-- The agenda I chose:

	-- Geronimo Overview
	-- Geronimo Architecture
	-- Apache Overview
-- Geronimo attributes (various assemblies, prerequisites, footprint, etc....)
-- How to install, configure, and use Geronimo
-- How to use Admin console
	-- Futures
	-- Reference resources
-- Deploying a sample application (I chose roller)
	-- Q & A

-- There was some familiarity with JBoss, Tomcat, and WebSphere but very little
Geronimo knowledge or experience
-- There was little knowledge (my impression ) of how open-source software is
developed
-- There seem to be a lot of interest in Geronimo. For example, these salient
points were very well received:

-- Geronimo's small footprint and memory requirements
	-- Geronimo plugin(s) capabilities
-- The fact that Geronimo can literally be downloaded, installed, and up and
running in a matter of just a few minutes
-- Capability to configure Geronimo as desired
-- Ease of use of the console

-- The questions were tamer than I had anticipated (translation: I knew all the
answers). The questions focused on these areas:

-- Why is IBM involved in Geronimo ??
-- What's the difference between WAS CE and Geronimo ??
-- Licensing differences between Geronimo and JBoss ??
-- Why Geronimo if we already use Tomcat ??

Even though there was initially little knowledge about Geronimo I left with the
impression that Geronimo was favorably received and would be downloaded by many
in attendance. Also, there were multiple requests for a copy of the
presentation. I had a wonderful time.

Thanks much. Tim

Nice summary Tim, thanks...remember, what happens in Vegas stays in
Vegas :)
