I don't know, Drupal 6 is still a stable and officially distributed version.
I was hoping maybe to release a 6.xx version of the plugin too.
That is why I have created a subfolder with the version in this particular
case.

I mean there is no need to create subfolder under "drupal" folder. I would
say we need to have plugin to the latest drupal in "trunk/plugins/drupal"
and plugins for earlier versions of drupal should go to
"branches/plugins/drupal.6" for example.
If it make sense :)
