[jira] [Created] (THRIFT-6379) configure links libboost_system.a, which Boost 1.89 and later no longer ship

Sylwester Lachiewicz created THRIFT-6379:
--------------------------------------------

             Summary: configure links libboost_system.a, which Boost 1.89 and later no longer ship
                 Key: THRIFT-6379
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/THRIFT-6379
             Project: Thrift
          Issue Type: Bug
          Components: Build Process
    Affects Versions: 0.25.0, 0.24.0
            Reporter: Sylwester Lachiewicz
             Fix For: 0.26.0

[configure.ac|https://github.com/apache/thrift/blob/master/configure.ac] sets {{BOOST_SYSTEM_LDADD}} to {{$BOOST_LIB_DIR/libboost_system.a}} unconditionally. Boost.System is header-only since 1.69, and 1.89 stopped shipping the stub library, so the lib/cpp tests fail to link against current Boost (Homebrew ships 1.92):

{noformat}
clang++: error: no such file or directory: '/opt/homebrew/opt/boost/lib/libboost_system.a'
{noformat}

configure still accepts Boost 1.56, where the library is needed, so it should link it only where it exists. The CMake build does not request the system component and is not affected.
