Add Google custom search to the website
Hi,
the number of pages on the website is growing and we also have a wiki that
contains useful information. I've experimented with adding a Google custom
search box on a local copy of the website which shows results of both the
website and the wiki (see attached images) on a page served by Google (this
is configurable). The free version will show ads (the core business of
Google).
Shall I add this search box to the website?

I am ok with the ad block at the top, and think that it has added value.

The referrer was file:///some/path/on/my/pc/index.html so I don't know if
that has influence on the ads.

Can you send me the URL? Or run a screen capture with the ads in place? I
think seeing them on the screen as the majority would, is a better visual
for the decision.

Re: Add Google custom search to the website
Posted by Jasha Joachimsthal <j....@onehippo.com>.
It looks like we can get an ad-free version (thanks Henny Bekker for the
hint):
In the Google search settings:
"Specify whether your organization's search engine is eligible to not show
advertising on results pages. Eligible organizations include those
organizations recognized as exempt from taxation under section 501(c)(3) of
the U.S. Internal Revenue Code. Outside of the U.S., this is available to
charitable organizations as defined under country-specific regulations or
requirements.
[] Show ads on results pages.
[] Do not show ads on results pages. By clicking here, I confirm that my
organization is eligible based on the definition above, and I understand
that Google may request proof of tax exempt or charitable status and
disable this feature if Google is not able to confirm my organization's
status."
On http://www.apache.org/foundation/contributing.html#tax-status
The Apache Software Foundation is a private operating foundation that is
registered as a non-profit, charitable organization under Section 501(c)(3)
of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code.

Subject: Add Google custom search to the website
Hi,
the number of pages on the website is growing and we also have a wiki that contains useful information. I've experimented with adding a Google custom search box on a local copy of the website which shows results of both the website and the wiki (see attached images) on a page served by Google (this is configurable). The free version will show ads (the core business of Google).
Shall I add this search box to the website?
