Important: OFBiz website update required before the end of the year

To all the committers and contributors:

at the end of 2012 the ASF Infrastructure mechanism is going to shut down the autoexport plugin that transforms Confluence pages into static html pages.

For example this url will no longer work:

https://cwiki.apache.org/OFBADMIN/apache-ofbiz-project-overview.html

while the url to the source document in Confluence will still work:

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OFBADMIN/Apache+OFBiz+Project+Overview

However if we change our site to link pages directly to Confluence we may cause issues to the ASF Confluence server that is not designed to support the potentially high traffic of a web site.

In short, we need to fix these links and for each of them we can adopt one of the following strategies:

A) remove the link from the website; this is an acceptable solution if the document it refers to is old or not very useful (the document will still leave in Confluence)
B) convert the document into a static html page; this should be done for all the important pages like https://cwiki.apache.org/OFBADMIN/mailing-lists.html or https://cwiki.apache.org/OFBADMIN/ofbiz-source-repository-and-access.html
C) modify the link to point directly to Confluence: this is acceptable only for less important pages, with low traffic, and the links should not be in a prominent place of the web site; the text around the link should also clearly mention that the link will move the user out of the website to the Wiki (Confluence)

Over the last years I did several changes to the website in preparation for this move and we should now be in a rather good position, but still some work is required to fix this last part.

Here is a roadmap, and we will need the help from you all (committers and contributors):

1) identify all the links that need to be fixed
2) categorize them according to the the fixing strategy we want to adopt (A, B, C); we can quickly discuss this in this list
3) create new pages for B
4) fix links for C

I would suggest to reply to this email mentioning the page (or task) you are going to address: in this way we will be able to split the work and complete it asap (using Jira task or a confluence page will be fine as well).

Thank you,

Jacopo

I fear this would need more effort than the community is disposed to give

D) Move our website (and the "important pages" from Confluence) to the
Apache CMS

http://www.apache.org/dev/cms.html

I haven't tried this but it sounds quite good

Olivier, all,

an easy way to get rid of several links to Confluence (especially the ones related to documentation) could be that of removing them from tab bars, side bars, inline texts and move them all to the following page:

http://ofbiz.apache.org/documentation.html

We could then add a text at the top of the page that clearly explains that all our documentation is maintained in the Wiki.

This could be an acceptable compromise.
Then we should also to remove the top bar search box and move it to the same documentation.html page: in this way it will be clear that it is only a box to serch info in Confluence.

Kind regards,

Jacopo

maybe "features" tab should go to the "Project Overview" page

I see, then we can make it more prominent there

Ah yes, sure, now I understand and I agree: that is a much needed next step while what we are doing now is just the bare minimum required to survival :-)

What do you mean with "re-deploying them accurately"?

It's ok with me as a WIP
But did not we loose the link to Fisheye? Since it's an ASF tool we could keep it on main page?
Also I understand that the list of pages under "The following is a selection of Wiki pages that may be useful to get started: " is a temporary mean to group things before redeploying them accurately, right?

Please review the patch below that I would like to commit today in order to fix the point #3; by moving most of the right bar links to the documentation page we have now a cleaner/simpler index page: with this new version it will be easier to refactor our confluence spaces (or migrate out of confluence) without affecting too much our website and the user experience.

Kind regards,

Jacopo

Sounds good to me, notably point 3 that I noticed today

Re: Important: OFBiz website update required before the end of the year

Posted by Jacopo Cappellato <ja...@hotwaxmedia.com>.
Here is an update on this effort.
In rev. 1413687 I have committed a series of changes to the website; here is the commit log:

=======================
First pass in the last step of the removal of automatically generated pages from Confluence from the OFBiz website:

* moved a bunch of links to Confluence-based documents from the index.html page to the documentation.html page where it is clearly mentioned that they refer to the Wiki
* several links to Confluence-based pages now open the page in a new browser tab: this should help the user understand what is from the site and what is from Confluence
* removed the Confluence search box from the header and moved to the documentation.html page where it is clearly stated that it is a form for Wiki searches
* converted two Confluence-based documents ("Getting Started" and "Project Overview") to static html pages; thanks to Olivier Heintz for the contribution (OFBIZ-5077, OFBIZ-5078); this commit contains a slightly modified version of the work contributed by Olivier;
* the new documents are now "children" of the main documentation.html page
* cleaned up and improved page <title/> elements
* fixed some formatting
=======================

I apologize for the big commit but this first step was difficult to do in small chunks because there was a need for some "structure" before moving things around; now we have a simple one and it should be easier to complete the work.
However I did my best to not change the content of the website and I did my best to add the bare minimum of new content required to glue the documentation.html page together; please review what I did and let me know if you see something wrong. All the main new content is in the 2 new pages that contain the text migrated by Olivier from Confluence.

Now the next steps should be:

1) remove the "features" tab from the top bar and add a link to the "main new features" document to the document.html page
2) convert the following two pages to static html:
https://cwiki.apache.org/OFBADMIN/mailing-lists.html
https://cwiki.apache.org/OFBADMIN/ofbiz-source-repository-and-access.html
3) remove some of the right bar links from the index.html and move the ones we need to the documentation.html page

The above tasks should be enough for what we have to complete by the end of the year.

Kind regards,

Jacopo

Maybe convert Main menu wiki page, to show all what is available but
with a text which clearly mention that all the link of this page will
move the user out of the website to the Wiki (Confluence)

IMO it's a important link on a Marketing point of view
Clearly, it should be up to date (all links should work)
Before removing, link I propose to try to migrate it, but not as the
first page to migrate

yes if the main menu wiki page was converted

All the C above, have a prominent link in the right bar and we can't level them there because it will drive too much traffic to the wiki; if we do not want to convert ot html files then we should treat them as A (and we could add links from a less relevant spot); do we all agree?

> B https://cwiki.apache.org/OFBIZ/in-the-news.html

I would rather classify the above (in-the-news.html) as A: remove the link without wasting time to convert; the page is old was an experiment that didn't work well (confusions, discussions etc...); if we will ever try again we could start from scratch.

> B https://cwiki.apache.org/OFBIZ/is-ofbiz-for-me.html

If we move to C then we will have to remove the top bar link to this page; if not we may have to convert to B

> C https://cwiki.apache.org/OFBIZ/ofbiz-tutorial-a-beginners-development-guide.html

Agreed; but then we will also remove the link from the right bar; are we fine with this?

> B https://cwiki.apache.org/OFBIZ/open-source-projects-and-standards.html

I think the above (old page) can be treated as A (remove the link to it and leave it as is in the Wiki)

> B https://cwiki.apache.org/OFBIZ/screenshots.html

In my opinion the above can be treated as A (remove the link to it and leave it as is in the Wiki)

the ASF CMS is definitely something to consider, we could discuss it in a separate thread and define a roadmap if the community is interested and willing to help: I doubt we will be able to do it before the end of the year and in the meantime we should continue with the roadmap outlined in this thread.
