Newbie startup question
What do I need to do to get an Axis2 service started so the samples
will run using the code in svn trunk? The samples work per the
instructions on the Wiki using the M2 release, but svn trunk now
directs to an Axis2 service that is supposed to be listening on port
9000. How do I get that configured and started? Sorry if the answer
here is RTFAM (A = axis). I have never used Axis as a standalone.
Thanks!
Phil

Can you post what you've tried? I haven't had a chance to look at
this, but was planning to later this evening.

Hi Phil and everybody...
Here's how you could run the new samples with Synapse and its sample
Axis2 server which comes pre-configured for you :-)
Once you extract the bin dist, you would get a samples folder, and
within it you will find two sub directories, axis2Server and
axis2Client. The axis2Server contains a script to start off your own
local (and totally separate from synapse) Axis2 server (on port 9000) to
be used for testing/hosting sample services. This uses the same lib's
used by Synapse and hence has no impact on the size of the distribution
and does not require the user to manually setup a test axis2 server with
rampart/RM etc.. which could get a bit complicated
You could now start synapse, and then your axis2 server and deploy (i.e.
just run ant from the selected service you want deployed) the sample
service/s, and then fire off the axis2 client/s to test messages passing
through synapse.
So far the first test case is working, and i will be fixing up the rest
tomorrow. Let me know your feedback on this if you get a chance

I think without requiring one to download an Axis2 instance to play
around, what we could do is provide a shell script to use use the
available Axis2 jars and start an Axis2 instance - using a separate
axis2.xml which we could bundle. I will work on this and try to include
this into the RC1 we are targeting for the end of this week.

You are most welcome Phil to help us. You might want to wait till end of
this week though, since I want to clean up most of the unused stuff
still handing around in odd places of the svn..and also make the above
change to simplify the samples. Any help to improve the samples and
documentation would be great indeed and writing them from an end-user
perspective would be even better.

Paul,
To make it simple for the users, I think we should make Synapse samples work
such that users should be able to connect to either one (wso2 or our server)
without editing any file in the standard distribution.
Also, how about hosting the same samples that get shipped with Axis2 1.1?
That way there will be less maintenance headache?

Sajniva,
We will host the same samples on our server too. This way the users have
redundancy. If one is not working they can connect to the other.

We can host whatever useful samples are needed to demo synapse
effectively. If anyone else also wants to offer such facilities let's
take them.
I don't think we should corrupt the design or design in order to make
samples work better.

That's an interesting idea. There are certainly situations where you
might want to use a technique like this. I'm actually quite +ve about
doing things like this in Synapse, but I know that it breaks the
intermediary/service host divide.

This may not be quite what you guys mean talking about hosting services, but
there's already the fault mediator that can return a fault directly based on
the request so you could write your own mediator to work just like the fault
mediator but return a response instead of a fault. Here's one using a
JavaScript mediator that works with the existing StockQuoteClient sample:
<in>
<script.js><![CDATA[
var symbol = mc.getPayloadXML()..*::symbol;
mc.setPayloadXML(<ns:getQuoteResponse xmlns:ns="
http://services.samples/xsd">
<ns:return>
<ns:last>{symbol.toString
().length}</ns:last>
</ns:return>
</ns:getQuoteResponse>);
mc.setTo(mc.getReplyTo());
mc.setResponse(true);
]]></script.js>
</in>
<send/>
Is this something that should be discouraged?

We can host whatever useful samples are needed to demo synapse
effectively. If anyone else also wants to offer such facilities let's
take them.
I don't think we should corrupt the design or design in order to make
samples work better.

how about hosting a remote demo service on wso2.net ?
like a dummy stockqote service which implements the features we need to
show.
you guys already have a tungsten server that people can play with, so why
not host this service ?
but we better make sure that it's up and running 99.99% of the time :)

I take your points Sanjiva, and we did use to have samples that used
publicly available services. Unfortunately, there aren't lots of easy
to use services that demonstrate different aspects which is I think
why we moved to Axis2 as the service host.
I think there is a balance to be had. On the one hand having samples
that show locally hosted services may confuse people. On the other
hand, expecting people to go and install another piece of software
before they can even try out Synapse seems like hard work. I'm sure
its putting people off.
I think we need to make it as easy as possible to install and try out Synapse.

+1. I think that's the right way to do it .. Synapse is a mediation
engine and not a service host. The fact that its on Axis2 and hence can
host services should not be exploited to make it easier to run the
samples.
If the samples require a local service then you need a local service
runtime to run the service. Ideally the samples should go against remote
services so that the users don't have to do an work to get the samples
running other than downloading Synapse.

Thanks, Asankha. I did essentially the steps you describe after your
first mail, running on Red Hat FC 3 and it worked fine (after googling
to find the ~ where Axis2 RC 1 is ;-).
Here is what I tried to do to get the samples to work using the axis2
deployed with Synapse (i.e., without starting a separate Axis 2):
1) Create the service aar and copy it to synapse_repository/services
2) Modify the axis2.xml in synapse_repository/conf to add
<transportReceiver name="http1"
class="org.apache.axis2.transport.http.SimpleHTTPServer">
<parameter name="port" locked="false">9000</parameter>
</transportReceiver>
and
<transportSender name="http1"
class="org.apache.axis2.transport.http.CommonsHTTPTransportSender">
<parameter name="PROTOCOL" locked="false">HTTP/1.1</parameter>
<parameter name="Transfer-Encoding" locked="false">chunked</parameter>
</transportSender>
I realize this could be totally bogus ;-)
Then start synapse using bin/synapse.sh -sample 0
No matter what I do in axis2.xml, the service does not get started.
That is probably because SynpseHttpServer does init(), but not start()
on the listeners.
Then "ant stockquote" from the samples directory puts synapse into a
loop that starts throwing errors when the client gives up. The loop
looks like this:
[HTTPWorker-1] DEBUG SynapseMessageReceiver - Synapse received a new message...

[HttpConnection-9000-1] DEBUG SynapseMessageReceiver - Synapse

Without the axis2.xml mods, you get connection refused, which makes
sense. I guess what must be happening here is that as Ruwan suggested,
Synapse "owns" all of the axis listeners, so mediation is going to
kick in for the forwarded request that comes in on 9000 and for the
first sample at least that mediation does nothing but send so is
essentially recursive. I tried to play with filters to pop out of the
loop, but a) I am still figuring out how these work and b) adding a
test for local host seemed to pollute the example.
I have not dug into standalone axis2 to see if it autoloads services
when you hit them a la tomcat. If it doesn't, that could cause a
fault, but I don't see faults until the client bails.
Sorry to cause a distraction here and that I can't be more immediately
helpful. Unless someone can find a simple way to make this work
without hacking the synapse_sample xml in distracting ways, I think it
is probably best just to doc the fact that you need to have a local
Axis2 RC1 running to get the samples to work. I would be happy to
patch the docs to reflect that if it would be helpful. For the
release, it might be best to put the Axis2 RC into a more easily
locatable place like, e.g. http://people.apache.org/builds/axis2 or
something.

Let me detail out the steps I followed just a while ago to test the
sample service/s with the latest Axis2 RC2
0) Update my Synapse checkout to the latest (the revision was 473910)
and perform a "maven clean release" using JDK 1.5.0_06 on WinXP (I've
placed this build here
http://people.apache.org/~asankha/Apache-Synapse-Incubating-SNAPSHOT-bin.zip
in-case you want to pick it up)
1) Downloaded Axis2 RC2 from
http://people.apache.org/~thilina/axis2/1.1-RC2/axis2-1.1-RC2.zip and
extracted into c:\java\axis2-1.1-RC2
2) Edited the Axis2 conf\axis2.xml's http port from 8080 to 9000 (as
expected by Synapse)
3) Extracted Apache-Synapse-Incubating-SNAPSHOT-bin.zip into
C:\Java\SynapseDist
4) Build the SimpleStockQuoteService from
C:\Java\SynapseDist\synapse\samples\services\SimpleStockQuoteService>ant
5) Deploy the SimpleStockQuoteService.aar built into the Axis2
repository (i.e. copy it into C:\Java\axis2-1.1-RC2\repository\services)
6) Start off Axis2 with C:\Java\axis2-1.1-RC2\bin>axis2server.bat and
make sure it starts on port 9000. Verify that the service is available
at http://localhost:9000/axis2/services/
7) Start Synapse using default (sample) configuration
C:\Java\SynapseDist\synapse\bin>start synapse.bat and see that it
started up on port 8080
8) Try first sample from C:\Java\SynapseDist\synapse\samples>ant stockquote
C:\Java\SynapseDist\synapse\samples>ant stockquote
Buildfile: build.xml
init:
[mkdir] Created dir: C:\Java\SynapseDist\synapse\samples\target\classes
compile:
[javac] Compiling 12 source files to
C:\Java\SynapseDist\synapse\samples\target\classes
stockquote:
[java] Standard :: Stock price = $158.50015410107443
BUILD SUCCESSFUL
Total time: 12 seconds
On the Synapse side, you should see debug level log messages which would
show you the message flow that took place.
On Axis2 you should see a log message that a stock quote has been generated
Sun Nov 12 15:37:39 IST 2006 :: Generating quote for : IBM
Let me know if you have go this to work, and which exact sample or
scenario that you are trying out, and I would help you on any issues. If
you are trying to build a custom scenario and have a synapse.xml or a
description on what you want to achieve, I could try that too and let
you know whats going wrong.

Synapse and Axis2 work, but my simple attempts at getting transports

Well, I started playing with this last night and have not been able to
get it to work, probably due to my lack of knowledge / understanding
of the whole setup. The forwarding is working, but I am not getting a
valid http response back from axis, probably because I did not hack
the axis2 config or deploy the service correctly. It seems to me that
Paul's idea above should work, with the "real" endpoint being the
local axis2 that synapse starts (?) listening on 6060. I will learn
some more today and either get it to work or ask more intelligent
questions about why it doesn't work.
Thanks in any case for pointing me in the right direction to get the
samples running. One thing I did not note in my previous post was
that I had to use the Axis 1.1 RC (as Asankha suggested) to get the
samples to run. I got response parse errors when I tried first using
the 1.0 Axis2 release.

Yes Paul,
First I didn't blame phil, since the same scenario (having the real service
in the axis2 where synapse is deployed) didn't work for me.... I just wanted
to know weather it is working.
In my case the request got dispatched to the axis2 service not to
synapse.... Will need to look in to that..

The idea is that you send the request to the proxy endpoint, and then
Synapse redirects it to the real endpoint. Should be fine. Anyway,
don't blame Phil, it was my suggestion :-))

I dont think that we can do this, that is because;
If we send a request to the synapse server for a particular service if that
is there in the local axis as well it will be dispatched to axis.... Not to
synapse isnt it???

Got it. Thanks and thanks to Asankha. Its a little inconvenient to
have to grab the 1.1 Axis RC and set that up, but it works. I think
using the local Axis2 would be easier. You could add an ant deploy
step so the sample services are not even deployed by default and use
the -sample switch to switch the axis2 conf.

Phil
I'm just taking a look at this. We are trying to get a release ready.
One of the problems is that there aren't a lot of good services
permanently hosted that we can show redirection to. One option I've
been thinking about is hosting some samples in the same Axis2 that
Synapse is listening on. That way there would be something ready to
play with when you install Synapse.
We'd have to have two different axis2.xml's to disable the services
for production use.

Hi Phil
Please download a standard Axis2 standalone/war distribution (I would
suggest a standalone).. and the best is to download the 1.1 RC2
Then go to the folder where the sample service you want to build exists
(e.g. SimpleStockQuoteService) and run ant. Then copy the .aar file into
the "services" folder of your Axis2 repository (e.g. repository/services).
Let me know if you run into any other issues
asankha
C:\Java\SynapseDist\synapse\samples\services\SimpleStockQuoteService>ant
Buildfile: build.xml
.....
[jar] Building jar:
C:\Java\SynapseDist\synapse\samples\services\SimpleStockQuoteService\servi
ces\SimpleStockQuoteService.aar
BUILD SUCCESSFUL
Total time: 8 seconds
C:\Java\SynapseDist\synapse\samples\services\SimpleStockQuoteService>
