Tomcat 5, jdk5 and avalon logger
I wanted to initiate a new Turbine project using those:
- jdk 5.0
- Tomcat 5.5.7
- Turbine 2.3.1
To initiate this project, I used the META plugin for maven. It runs
perfectly on a windows platform where I had no problem at all.
When I had to run the same webapp on a Linux platform, I had a
problem, even though I use the same tools including versions.
The problem is about the avalon logger utility that fails to
initiliaze. Here is a trace of what I get:
2005-03-20 16:30:37,089 [http-8080-Processor24] ERROR

I searched the mailing lists, but I found nothing but this mail with
exact same exception:
http://www.mail-archive.com/turbine-dev@jakarta.apache.org/msg10855.html
I tried to run the same webapp (helloworld) using tomcat 5.0.28 and
the j2sdk 1.4.2. This time it runs perfectly. I conclued that the
problem could come from the use of reflection...
If anyone know a way to fix this, I would be very thanksful. Anyway,
if it does not the project I work on, will have to use jdk 1.4.2.
I attach (don't know if it works on the list) 2 log files that could
help. They are the log files configured with the meta plugin (others
have no logs).
Thank you people for any answer,

Thank you for this information. I so find out that my jdk installation
seems to be a kind of exotic ?! It the sun jdk, and I cannot figure
out why.
I reinstalled my jdk tonight, and now I have the same "ls" as you, and
everything works fine!
Thank you everyone for the help !

Re: Tomcat 5, jdk5 and avalon logger
Posted by Samuel Le Berrigaud <sa...@gmail.com>.
This time I just write ti user list (sorry for wrting to both before...)
The version of avalon framework I use is 4.1.4. And as it works on
win32 platrforms, I assumed it was not the problem...
The version of log4j is 1.2.8, and it is this version I had both in my
common/lib and in my WEB-INF/lib. Now, I only have it once in
common/lib. I checked, it is in the classpath when Tomcat loads, and
it has the Priority class...
Still, it doesn't work... I am a bit lost here...
I checked on my Win32 platform, and there is no avalon jar in the
jre/lib/ext of the jdk. But this one exists on Linux.
Any idea left ?...
Thanks,

Nah. Not entirely.
I think that the excalibur-logger was using the newer avalon-logger, and you
had a too old avalon-framework in place.
Anyway...

Looks to me that you either don't have Log4J in place, or that you are using a
too new Log4J version. Priority should still exist in Log4J v1.2.8, but has
been removed in the new 1.3 branch.

Hi Sam,
It sounds like a version conflict in log4j. What version was the jar you
deleted from WEB-INF/lib? Try copying this version to tomcat's common/lib
(hopefully this won't break tomcat).
Good luck,
David
PS: You don't need to write to both the dev and user lists - just the user
list is fine.

Thanks David for helping.
Here is what I found so far. It seems that it is the jdk 5.0 that make
the problem occur.
I looked at the jre/lib/ext directory and I found there an avalon framework
jar:
- avalon-framework-cvs-20020806.jar
So, I replace it (no sure if necessary) with the
avalon-framework-4.1.4.jar,and then I removed the one I had in my
WEB-INF/lib directory.
So now I have another exception thrown (so I think I am one step
further, hope it's not back).
The exception is:
2005-03-20 18:24:45,718 [http-8080-Processor24] ERROR
org.apache.catalina.core.ContainerBase.[Catalina].[localhost].[/helloworld]

at

So, I arefully looked if I hab log4j in my path and YES I have it! But
I had it twice.
First in $CATALINA_BASE/common/lib an one in my WEB-INF/lib directory.
I removed the one from the WEB-INF/lib, but I still have this exception...
I looked all over other libs directory, I only have one instance of
the jar in the path, and it is vesion 1.2.8 in common/lib (tomcat).
Has anyone any idea ?
Thanks,

Re: Tomcat 5, jdk5 and avalon logger
Posted by Samuel Le Berrigaud <sa...@gmail.com>.
Thanks David for helping.
Here is what I found so far. It seems that it is the jdk 5.0 that make
the problem occur.
I looked at the jre/lib/ext directory and I found there an avalon framework jar:
- avalon-framework-cvs-20020806.jar
So, I replace it (no sure if necessary) with the
avalon-framework-4.1.4.jar,and then I removed the one I had in my
WEB-INF/lib directory.
So now I have another exception thrown (so I think I am one step
further, hope it's not back).
The exception is:
2005-03-20 18:24:45,718 [http-8080-Processor24] ERROR
org.apache.catalina.core.ContainerBase.[Catalina].[localhost].[/helloworld]
- StandardWrapper.Throwable
java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/apache/log4j/Priority
at org.apache.avalon.excalibur.logger.Log4JLoggerManager.<init>(Log4JLoggerManager.java:120)
at org.apache.avalon.excalibur.logger.Log4JLoggerManager.<init>(Log4JLoggerManager.java:101)
at org.apache.avalon.excalibur.logger.Log4JLoggerManager.<init>(Log4JLoggerManager.java:93)
Thanks,
SaM

RE: Tomcat 5, jdk5 and avalon logger
Posted by David Demner <tu...@demner.com>.
Hi Samuel,
It's probably a rogue jar file somewhere that's a different version from the
one the Avalon logger is expecting. Check in your java jre/lib, tomcat's
common/lib, server/lib, shared/lib etc. Try combinations of jdk/tomcat. If
it works with jdk5.0 with tomcat 5.0.28 it's probably a jar file in tomcat's
lib folders, if jdk1.4.2 with tomcat 5.5.7 works it's probably a jar file in
jdk5.0's lib folders.
I have a similar setup here and it works fine.
Good luck,
David

Subject: Tomcat 5, jdk5 and avalon logger
I wanted to initiate a new Turbine project using those:
- jdk 5.0
- Tomcat 5.5.7
- Turbine 2.3.1
To initiate this project, I used the META plugin for maven. It runs
perfectly on a windows platform where I had no problem at all.
When I had to run the same webapp on a Linux platform, I had a
problem, even though I use the same tools including versions.
The problem is about the avalon logger utility that fails to
initiliaze. Here is a trace of what I get:

I tried to run the same webapp (helloworld) using tomcat 5.0.28 and

problem could come from the use of reflection...
