Using getElementsByTagName on a subtree

Is it possible?

I wanted to use it from a Node, but it would not work (normal)
Am I missing a philosophycal issue here? Why isn't there a similar
function that would work on subtrees?

I can always parse through the children myself, but found it would
be worth asking first
