Selecting a Logo

The logo artwork has been posted to
http://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/UIMA-22. Please vote for your
favorite.

We need a banner and a small logo (16x16, we can resize what's posted
to fit) for the window icon. A larger logo I may use on the "about"
dialogs.

As for my vote... I think the white-background banner looks better and
is easier to add to the GUI (our old banner had a white-background).
And I think I would go with #6 UIMA-logo-big.png for the logo.

All this on the banner? How about just the URL, without the "effort"?

My preference is #2 for the banner, and #6 for a big logo, and #8 for
the small logo (instead of #9 because the little people make the rest of
the logo too small).

Branding rules at Apache for podlings
(http://incubator.apache.org/guides/branding.html ) say the
name *must* be Apache UIMA and a mention must be included that the
project is under incubation.
Note that the logo need not contain "Apache" - I deduce this from many
other logos for other top level
projects at the Apache site.

Suitable mentions that the project is under incubation include inclusion
of the http://incubator.apache.org/uima URL.

I think it would be good to use the banner to "advertise" this is an
open source project, and invite (?)
new developers to join up. It might also be good to show the URL
"http://incubator.apache.org/uima"
(which would address the requirement of the incubator).

So how about changing "An Open Source Project" to
"An Apache Open Source Effort - http://incubator.apache.org/uima"
(using the word "effort" instead
of "project" to avoid Apache complaining about this having to wait until
we graduate, because
project might be construed to be a top-level, approved, project.

I kind of agree with that. With appropriate image editing software I
doubt it would be hard to change. Does anybody already have something
like that installed and want to volunteer to change the text for us?

Hm, 3 or 5 if I have to make a choice.

I think the text on the banner should not say "An Open Source Project".
How about "An Apache Incubator Project". No idea if it's easy to
change that.

One more thing... I realized that changing the resolution to 16x16 was
unnecessary, it can be any resolution and it will be sized
appropriately. So I switched it back to the 50x50 image (but again
with the white border removed). Still this doesn't help the fact that
the individual letters are very small at window icon size.

Even though the decision hasn't been made yet, just to get a rough
idea of how things will look I checked in the banner (#2) and window
icon (#6) and changed our GUIs over to use them. We can easily
replace this with whatever graphics we choose.

I resized the banner to have height 60 pixels like our old banner
(keeping the aspect ratio the same). For the window Icon I first
eliminated most of the white border around the image then resized to
16x16. It's still pretty small for a window icon, you may want to
take a look and let me know what you think.

I'm no graphics expert. I just used MS Paint to do these quick
resizes. I also am not sure of the realtive merits of different image
file formats for this kind of thing. If someone has more skills in
this area and wants to redo the images, feel free.

I like #5 and #2 from the selection. (and Michaels comment)

btw. will the logo be provided as a vector image as well, so it can be
scaled later to any size desired? (like eps for instance)

My votes are: #2 and #5. But when really using #5 we have to change #2
since this also contains the people ..:-)

Re: Selecting a Logo

Here's the summary:

Adam: 6
Michael: 5
Mirko: 5
Thilo: 5 or 3
Marshall: 6
Eddie: 7 or 3

Nothing got a majority, #5 has a slim lead over #6 and #3.

However, if we do feature extraction on the images and correlate with
the votes :) ... it does seem that the votes are 4-2 against the
"people icons" and 4.5 - 1.5 in favor of the slanted "i" block that #5
and #6 share (Thilo's vote being split).

Therefore I declare #5 the winner. However this is probably worth an
up or down vote in a separate thread that I'll start.

The banner, I think everyone agrees, should be the white background
with the logo. I can probably manage to erase the people icons from
#2 without much trouble. Still need to figure out what the text
should say.

Sadly, I was being serious. But now that I understand each letter was
to be a different font
everthing is perfectly clear.

I'm not sure if this was a serious comment (often a hazard with Eddie
:)... but one of the concepts for the logo was "To relate to the
unstructured nature of information, 4 different typefaces are used".
In any case to do that exceeds my image-editing comfort zone. :)

I like 7 or 3, but suggest "i" to be a capital "I" (in the same font
as the "M") so that we don't get stuck with typing even more mixed
case things like "UiMA".
