That is exactly the same problem I'm having. I think that the virtual
server is working, it's just that the virtual server document root is
defaulting to "default" document root. I've had no luck fixing this
yet.

Dark,
Thanks for the response. I have it fixed. I changed the "*" in the
VirtualHost section to an IP address, but I forgot to change it in
ssl.conf too. Once I had that corrected, everything works. I have to
create new SSL certificates though. The old 1.3.23 version
certificates don't appear to be working.

Sparky,
I had the same problem. Here is what I did to fix it. I had a single
IP machine, but multiple host names. I replaced the "*" everywhere
with the host IP address. See below
# server name.
<VirtualHost 192.168.0.55>
ServerName www.blackmesa-isp.net
ServerAdmin webmaster@blackmesa-isp.net
DocumentRoot /var/www/html
</VirtualHost>
For SSL, in conf.d/ssl.conf, I changed <VirtualHost _default_:443> to
<VirtualHost 192.168.0.55:443>. The bottom line was that I had to
explicitly state the IP address rather than use the default *.

Well, you obviously have a <VirtualHost> section that doesn't use "*".
Why do you have <VirtualHost _default_:443> if you aren't running SSL?
Get rid of that virtual host section.

I have not read the whole thread, but what OS are you running? The
problem maybe with your DNS... if your using BIND(for example)... you
must point the domain(s). Other than that your VirtualHost looks ok....

As I said, the IP address is required only if you are doing complicated
things like mixing name-based with IP based or port based virtual hosts.

The problem here is consistency between the values of NameVirtualHost and
VirtualHost. You can use a specific IP for all these vaules, so '*' is not
required. I don't see anything wrong in this regard for the document.

I'm going to get yelled at but I don't care.

You can alternatively specify an explicit IP address in place of the * in

Have you read the name virtual hosting docs?
They tell you that the argument to the <VirtualHost> directive must match
the argument to the NameVirtualHost directive. In other words,
replace ALL the "*"s by the appropriate IP address.

Starting httpd: [Mon Apr 21 15:24:41 2003] [warn] NameVirtualHost
208.252.219.240:80 has no VirtualHosts
Yet there are two Virtual Hosts:
#<VirtualHost *>
# ServerName www.blackmesa-isp.net
# ServerAdmin webmaster@blackmesa-isp.net
# DocumentRoot /var/www/html
#</VirtualHost>
#<VirtualHost *>
# ServerAdmin webmaster@emsbureau.com
# ServerName www.emsbureau.com
# DocumentRoot /httpd/development
#</VirtualHost>
I had to comment them out to get the server back running.

As was mentioned earlier this week on the list, if you do mixed name-based
and IP/port based vhosting (as in the case of ssl) then you need to
replace the "*" with the specific IP address that your server is listening
on.

Joshua:
I changed the httpd.conf like you said to this:
NameVirtualHost *
#
# VirtualHost example:
# Almost any Apache directive may go into a VirtualHost container.
# The first VirtualHost section is used for requests without a known
# server name.
<VirtualHost *>
ServerName www.blackmesa-isp.net
ServerAdmin webmaster@blackmesa-isp.net
DocumentRoot /var/www/html
</VirtualHost>
#
<VirtualHost *>
ServerAdmin webmaster@emsbureau.com
ServerName www.emsbureau.com
DocumentRoot /httpd/development
</VirtualHost>
the result was this:
Starting httpd: [Mon Apr 21 12:41:52 2003] [error] VirtualHost
_default_:443 -- mixing * ports and non-* ports with a NameVirtualHost
address is not supported, proceeding with undefined results
Is virtual hosts defaulting to SSL by the 'VirtualHost _default_:443'?
That's not what I need. Must be something else going on behind the scenes
here...

Where in the documentation does it say to do that? (Trick question; it
doesn't.)
Replace the hostname in the <VirtualHost> directive with "*" to start.
But there is another problem here: At least from where I'm sitting,
www.emsbureau.com does not resolve to an IP address. It could be that you
have a DNS problem.

[users@httpd] Virtual Hosting problem
Posted by Sparky Kopetzky <sp...@blackmesa-isp.net>.
I thought I had this problem whipped but I don't. I can't get named virtual
hosts working. I'm running Apache 2.0.40 under RedHat 8.0. Here's the
config:
NameVirtualHost *
#
# VirtualHost example:
# Almost any Apache directive may go into a VirtualHost container.
# The first VirtualHost section is used for requests without a known
# server name.
<VirtualHost www.blackmesa-isp.net>
ServerName www.blackmesa-isp.net
ServerAdmin webmaster@blackmesa-isp.net
DocumentRoot /var/www/html
</VirtualHost>
#
<VirtualHost www.emsbureau.com>
ServerAdmin webmaster@emsbureau.com
ServerName www.emsbureau.com
DocumentRoot /httpd/development
</VirtualHost>
It's exactly like the Apache documentation but does not work. When I try to
hit www.emsbureau.com I get my primary web site, not the pages in the
emsbureau DocumentRoot.
Can someone help that knows what's going on here??
Appreciate the help.

Hi,
I have a setup similar to yours and it works fine for web-serving.
My home server is using a re-directed DNS: http://dforeman.dns2go.com and
it's running WinXP (a close relative to Win2K). I run it behind a Dlink
router. My ISP is roadrunner. They supposedly block ports 139 and 80
inbound, but my server works just fine on port 80. I did a "port forward" on
the router's configuration page. I previously had a Linksys router, but it
died. But it too, worked just fine for web-serving. You really should not
set your machine to be in a DMZ, because that opens up ALL your ports (most
routers have built-in NAT protection - which acts like a firewall for
inbound traffic).

D. J. Foreman, Ph. D.

Your best bet is to get your own domain name..
As long as you have a fixed IP address then you could have a
web address www.whateverdomainyouchoose.com and have web
services directed to any port you choose.
Before you get your domain ( www.godaddy.com seem to have
pretty good prices). Before you choose your domain email me
privately with your ipaddress to make the arrangements and I
will give you the information you will need to enter into
godaddy's database so that our dns can direct the web
traffic to the correct port.

Posted by vizion communication <vi...@ixpres.com>.
Running a DNS is not something you would set up casually
because you ned more than one system.
Where did you get your domain name from.
So you own the domain servegame.com or is that someone
else's domain?
If you own it then you can decide to use an alternative DNS
service. IF you do I can then put your domain onto our DNS
server systems.

Re: [users@httpd] test please
Posted by vizion communication <vi...@ixpres.com>.
If your isp blocks port 80 and you have independent control
of your own dns you could configure
www.whateverdomainyou.like to another port in the services
section of the zone config file and thereby by pass the port
restriction. If you do not have independent control of your
dns then anyone with a dns can help you out if you change
your dns provider.

David,
Still does not work, however if you telnet to the port it is
accepting requests so I guess that the server is up - it may be
your configuration - can you see the website locally (ie from
127.0.0.1 or by using an equated http://lordsofd2.servegame.com
pointing to 127.0.0.1 in your hosts file if you are doing virtual
hosting)?

Re: [users@httpd] test please

Lordsofd2.servegame.com returns IP address of 66.169.74.233
and responds to pings.
Your name servers are nf1.no-ip.com, nf2.no-ip.com
The same ip address is in the A records for
ashe.nc.charter.com
Your web server does not respond - - eithr the server is not
running or is impropoerly configured.

It does resolve to 66.169.74.233 but I can not establish a http connection
to the machine. I was able to ping the IP. I was unable to telnet to port
80. Firewalled by your ISP or your OS maybe?
