[jira] [Commented] (GEOMETRY-97) Use Centroid instead of Barycenter
[ https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/GEOMETRY-97?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=17111062#comment-17111062 ]
Bruno P. Kinoshita commented on GEOMETRY-97:
--------------------------------------------
Not sure if helpful, but I remember - vaguely, very vaguely - learning about "centroide". I looked it up to make sure I wasn't going crazy, and saw on Wikipedia in Portuguese and Spanish the term "baricentro" as an alternative to "centroide". But I had never seen or heard about baricentro until today.
So +1 from me for centroid :)

> In geometry, the terms "centroid" and "barycenter" are synonyms referring to the center of mass of a geometric object. The code currently uses "barycenter" when referring to the center of mass (ex: {{region.getBarycenter()}}). However, "centroid" seems to be used more frequently. For example, one is far more likely to find relevant results when searching Google for "polygon centroid" than "polygon barycenter". Also, "barycenter" has an alternate meaning in astrophysics, where it refers to the center of mass of two or more orbiting objects. It seems to me like "centroid" is a better, more geometry-focused term to use in the code.
