How to install and run geronimo in linux?
Hi, i just started to use linux and i like to start using geronimo on linux
platform. However i cannot find any installation guide for linux. Can i know
where i can find it or some guidance from you guys or did i miss the
installation guide?
I saw there are 3 types to down load, one is j2ee certified, one is little g
and another is source.
Which one is better? currently i download the source type.
Thanks

Hi there, sry if this turns out to be a double post (I'm currently
having some mailing problems)
As you are new to linux maybe you also want some directions on bits and
pieces specific to G on linux. The following is some basic stuff so if
you feel you are comfortable with linux you wont find much of interest
in it ;)
Although it may (almost) be a question of taste (arguable) a good place
to "untar" ( tar zxvf gernoimo-xxxxx-tar.gz ) Geronimo would be in
/usr/local (at least on a server install) and to get it running without
any special environment settings for java (as I assume you already have
installed) you can create and place a file called setenv.sh (its a
script file) in <geronimo-home>/bin (make it executable (x) with the
command "chmod og+x") containing something like this
------------------------------------------------
#!/bin/sh
JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun
JAVA_OPTS="-Djava.awt.headless=true -XX:MaxPermSize=128m -Xms128M
-Xmx512M -server"
------------------------------------------------
Naturally the JAVA_HOME setting depends on where your particular
distribution puts java (or how you have it set up) the above is on a
ubuntu system with sun:s java 1.5.x installed. Now to start the server
just open a console and cd to <geronimo home>/bin and execute the
command "./startup.sh" it will start the server. To keep track on whats
going on you may want to take a "tail" peek at G:s log files so in a
console, cd to <geronimo-home>/var/log and execute the command "tail -f
geronimo.log" (there is also a geronimo.out log file).
Also as mentioned by others a good place start for the G bits is on
http://cwiki.apache.org/GMOxDOC21/installation-and-configuration.html

The supported version for all current releases is 1.5. As far as I know, it
still mostly works with 1.6 but I believe there are issues that pop up every
now and then. It's highly recommended that you use 1.5. What do you mean
when you say that the only download you can get from sun is 1.6? Is it some
sort of requirement for work? If not, try here:
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/previous.jsp
The downloads you've be looking for are under J2SE 5.0.
Make sure you point the JAVA_HOME variable that Peter was discussing to
whichever 1.5 jdk you download.

In case you are using ubuntu (or debian) you can do a "apt-get install
sun-java5-jdk", ubuntu multivers repository contains the package. If you
like to use a GUI app search for sun-java in Synaptic.

Another thought I just had is that you might want to verify that you're
using the proper version of java. You can find out what version of java you
are using by typing "java -version" in the console. You should be using
some variation of 5.

Hi,
It's great to know that you are wanting to use Geronimo. We have the
installation instructions here (although, running it is very simple).
http://cwiki.apache.org/GMOxDOC21/installation-and-configuration.html
The source code actually builds the full and little Geronimo
assemblies. Little G is just the bare minimal that our app server
needs in order to run. The full assembly contains a lot of extra
components such as OpenEJB to support other JEE related things.
Additionally, you can install other plugins as needed to cater to your
specific needs.
Hope I answered your question,
