As someone that has a working, from-scratch Hive 3.1.2 + LLAP installation that performs exceptionally well, I found the salt in this message highly enjoyable.

Hey qq,

This is not an answer but a few hints for you before you go ahead with your Hive project.

  1.  First of all, do you really really really really need to work directly on Hive instead of using an integrated solution such as Cloudera?
  2.  Ask yourself again, do you really really really need to work with Hive directly? Companies spend entire budgets to make this stuff work. There is no plug and play with Hive, just "Try and Hell" x 1,000.
  3.  Among Apache projects, Hive has been by far the worst when it comes to meeting their own expectations. Unless you do something hyper dumb with Hive, you will only get mediocre and limited results.
  4.  Hive documentation create a deceitful perception that Hive can deliver on its promises. But if you comb through stack overflow and other discussion forums, you will be able to see Hive contributors write encoded messages telling you that Hive is barely functional as a reasonably plug and play solution.
  5.  Do you have a small team of Hive project code contributors in your team? If you don't, you are facing hell. Forget about what you promised to your management. You will not meet your expected deadlines, plain and simple.

I hope you collect enough information and make a sound judgement so you don't waste your time.
