Incubator PMC/Board report for Dec 2014 ([ppmc])

Dear podling,

This email was sent by an automated system on behalf of the Apache Incubator PMC.
It is an initial reminder to give you plenty of time to prepare your quarterly
board report.

The board meeting is scheduled for Wed, 17 December 2014, 10:30 am PST. The report
for your podling will form a part of the Incubator PMC report. The Incubator PMC
requires your report to be submitted 2 weeks before the board meeting, to allow
sufficient time for review and submission (Wed, Dec 3rd).

Please submit your report with sufficient time to allow the incubator PMC, and
subsequently board members to review and digest. Again, the very latest you
should submit your report is 2 weeks prior to the board meeting.

Thanks,

The Apache Incubator PMC

Submitting your Report
----------------------

Your report should contain the following:

 * Your project name
 * A brief description of your project, which assumes no knowledge of the project
   or necessarily of its field
 * A list of the three most important issues to address in the move towards
   graduation.
 * Any issues that the Incubator PMC or ASF Board might wish/need to be aware of
 * How has the community developed since the last report
 * How has the project developed since the last report.

This should be appended to the Incubator Wiki page at:

  http://wiki.apache.org/incubator/December2014

Note: This is manually populated. You may need to wait a little before this page
      is created from a template.

Mentors
-------
Mentors should review reports for their project(s) and sign them off on the
Incubator wiki page. Signing off reports shows that you are following the
project - projects that are not signed may raise alarms for the Incubator PMC.

Re: Incubator PMC/Board report for Dec 2014 ([ppmc])

Posted by Joe Witt <jo...@gmail.com>.
Folks,

I went ahead and updated the status to reflect our mailing list
subscriptions as suggested by Sean and changed some wording so it didn't
seem like we were using our new podling status as an excuse for limited
information.

---
--------------------
NiFi

NiFi is a dataflow system based on the concepts of flow-based programming.

NiFi has been incubating since 2014-11-24.

Three most important issues to address in the move towards graduation:

  1. Establishment of Apache Infrastructure. Git establishment is
outstanding with INFRA-8707
  2. Produce an initial release.
  3. Grow the community beyond those involved in the incubator proposal.

Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be
aware of?

None at this time.

How has the community developed since the last report?

Since podling initiation our dev mailing list has 42 subscribers and the
commits mailing list has 19.

How has the project developed since the last report?

Since podling initition the team has mailing lists, website, and Jira
setup. Awaiting INFRA action for Git. We should then be able to better
communicate and grow. We fully understand though that Infra has been very
busy addressing the SVN server issues.

Date of last release:

  N/A

When were the last committers or PMC members elected?

Entered incubation 2014-11-24. There have been
comments/messages/subscriptions on the mailing lists from folks not on the
initial contributors list. We believe there is a good opportunity to bring
on more folks from a more diverse base fairly quickly.

Thanks for putting this together Joe. Since the NiFi Jira is now created, I
suggest taking that out of the report as an outstanding item. Also, I
suggest providing the real Jira number for Git setup so that the board /
IPMC can watch it if they feel necessary.

Re: Incubator PMC/Board report for Dec 2014 ([ppmc])

Posted by Arvind Prabhakar <ar...@streamsets.com>.
It would be good to have one or two committers to have list moderation
privileges. That way, they can better handle the community work etc.

Joe, if you would like to take that responsibility, please file an INFRA
jira asking to be made moderator on all the nifi lists.

Arvind

Re: Incubator PMC/Board report for Dec 2014 ([ppmc])

Posted by Benson Margulies <bi...@gmail.com>.
I'm a little buried this evening. Honestly, I think that these numbers
are cute but inessential. If I have time in the morning I'll do it .

Re: Incubator PMC/Board report for Dec 2014 ([ppmc])

Posted by Joe Witt <jo...@gmail.com>.
Ben

Great. Glad to hear you're interested in participating. This current
thread was just about putting some early info together for a status report
so no worries there.

Best place to start to learn about the how to be a contributor is here (i
believe): http://www.apache.org/foundation/getinvolved.html

Basic idea then is to ensure you have an ICLA on file and a CCLA if
appropriate for your case.

We should have code available very soon which obviously makes contributing
much more fun :-)

thanks
Joe

Re: Incubator PMC/Board report for Dec 2014 ([ppmc])

Posted by Benjamin Janssen <bj...@gmail.com>.
Joe, if you're generating numbers on interest for contribution, add me to
the list. I've never done open source before and don't know how much time
I'll have with the new kid but this seems like a great opportunity to learn
with you guys.

Re: Incubator PMC/Board report for Dec 2014 ([ppmc])

Posted by Joe Witt <jo...@gmail.com>.

Thanks
Joe

In the "how has the community developed" section, it would help if you
could note how many subscribers have shown up on the lists since they were
established.

Also probably worth noting that there a few potential contributors have
expressed interest in ramping up on the list.

Hello

I entered the section for NiFi. Pretty dry just yet but hopefully next
month we'll have something more substantive.

Seem reasonable?

Thanks

Thanks Sean. I'll take a stab this evening and then shoot you a note
asking for your thoughts. I have no idea yet what these look like but
can't be too bad for a week old podling.

THanks

In my experience the VP prepares something (since they're the ones
officially reporting).

Since we're still in incubator we don't have a VP, but you seem like the
obvious choice. ;)

Let me know if you'd like a hand.

Re: Incubator PMC/Board report for Dec 2014 ([ppmc])

Oh... Benson I recall had argued we push to the next reporting cycle.

Not at all familiar with this. Is this something the team does as a
whole? Is this a mentor thing or a committer thing? I'll be happy to take
a stab at it if it is ok for me to do so. Should be really simple in this
case.

Thanks
Joe

Is someone already putting together the board report? It'd be nice to get
something up on the list for review before we have to turn it in to the
IPMC tomorrow.

Whomever is doing it, need any help?
