Re: [DISCUSS] Recommendation for addition to PR awards
Hi,
I like the idea! We always award very big and complex awards and often
have the problem of really many PRs whcih are elegible.
Having an award for all contributors which had their first PR is a cool
idea for an addition.

What I meant was allowing folks with more than 1 PR to participate.
But a minimum 10 is a good idea. It's hard to achieve it in a workshop/development sprint or something like that, but it might encourage contributors to continue after the event.
Best,
Wei

Re: [DISCUSS] Recommendation for addition to PR awards
Posted by Srabasti Banerjee <sr...@gmail.com>.
Great discussion - Thanks all for your inputs and recommendations!
Based on consensus, starting with a new award - "Rookie PR of the Month"
#rookieprotm.
Will send out an email shortly on dev-list for voting, so we can start
receiving nominations for the month of November.
Since this is our first addition to the existing "Top PR of the Month"
award, we will continue to evolve to a better state, and improvise based on
learnings from our experimental run.
Looking forward to your votes/suggestions!
Warm Regards,
Srabasti Banerjee

Re: [DISCUSS] Recommendation for addition to PR awards
Posted by Jens Scheffler <js...@apache.org>.
For the "#rookieprotm" +1 for at least 10 contributions but not being in
"Top 100" of all committers is also a good idea, current threshold would
be 35 commits.

Re: [DISCUSS] Recommendation for addition to PR awards
Posted by Wei Lee <we...@gmail.com>.
Are we going to keep it as the first PR strictly? I feel something like one of the first 10 or 20 PRs or someone not in the first 100 in this list https://github.com/apache/airflow/graphs/contributors might work better. We can encourage newcomers to stay longer instead of creating one and leaving. Something like `#rookieprotm` works for me. We don’t really need to change the self-nomination process. But we probably need to promote this idea more so that folks are more willing to celebrate their own contribution.
Best,
Wei

My 2c: For self nomination, we can either use the devlist *if *the script
fails to catch a PR, but staying on
similar lines as regular PR's, we can update the script to detect
#rookieprotm as we do with
#protm comments.

Re: [DISCUSS] Recommendation for addition to PR awards
Posted by Briana Steel via dev <de...@airflow.apache.org>.
Love the idea of adding a "First Contribution" category.
I agree with Jarek’s suggestion. To keep things streamlined and avoid
complicating the process, it makes sense to update the existing script so
it includes a category for "Top First PRs."
This approach lets us avoid reinventing the wheel while still recognizing
new contributors.
Also, people can always self-nominate or nominate others in the voting
thread, so I don’t think we need an additional process for that part.

Re: [DISCUSS] Recommendation for addition to PR awards

I really like the "Rooky PR" and for extension I'd rather propse to stay
with "only" top 1.
What we can consider is that we just rather extend categories like
"Providers", "UI" like the Oscars(r) or Nobel Price also have
categories. But maybe before adding too much complexity just start with
a second?

I think we can start with 1 Rookie PR (I like the name) and see if we can
get more candidates - and expand it.
Bold idea: maybe we want to ask people to self-nominate (maybe with a
little bit of nagging behind the scenes ;) )
Having someone like Srabasti or generally - in the future someone who is
relatively new to the community - running it would make it less
intimidating to self nominate and explain your PR. I think this is the most
difficult thing to overcome with new contributors - to be more open and
"public" about your own - even small - PRs, but maybe we can create an
atmosphere of this welcoming and receptive discussion that will make people
more eager to do so. I would really love to see that and get more people
being a little more bold in "public" discourse - this is a very important
part of open-source contributions and this might be a nice way of learning
it.
That's a bit risky though - it's always easier to engage when you see the
list ready - and our script is developed to be somewhat "objectiv-ish" in
pre-selection. Maybe we could update the script to pre-select some of those
rookie-PRs automatically, but naybe would also encourage

This is a great proposal. Something like a Rookie PR would definitely help
make the project feel more welcoming and inclusive. We should definitely
rotate reviewers for Rookie PRs so more maintainers engage with newcomers.
In my opinion, I think we should encourage community nominations instead of
just votes.

Re: [DISCUSS] Recommendation for addition to PR awards
Posted by Srabasti Banerjee <sr...@gmail.com>.
Sounds good! I can volunteer to run the "Rookie PRs".
From the discussions above, if we did 3 (instead of 1) Top PRs of the
month, we will cover more contributions impacting Apache Airflow product
space, possibly selecting one each from different categories like UI, Core,
CI/CD, Helm Charts, AI.
On the other hand, 3 Rookie PRs, can cover a mix of different levels and
categories including documentation, to inspire more newcomers to contribute.
PS - Whatever the community consensus chooses on the Top "X". 3 is just a
recommendation:)
We can have X "Top PRs" and X "Rookie PRs" of the month.
Thoughts on this?
