session with http and https

Are there any hard and fast rules regarding session with http and https. For 
instance if you create a session in a https connection, would the session 
then be valis in a subsequent http connection. I am creating the session in 
https, doing a redirect to next servlet in http, and that servlet will not 
have the newly created session. By the way is it true you always need a full 
path when doing a redirect?? THanks
