Sadly Ubuntu 10.04 LTS uses 13B03. I know there's a newer LTS out there but I'd wager 10.04 is still pretty popular. I wonder if we could finagle a backport of something better?

Ideally we'd say R14B03 as the minimum, since that's past the only known DOA release ("R14B02"), but R13B04 is the true minimum.

The challenge with the backport that Benoit identified will come if an Ubuntu maintainer wants to update the version of CouchDB in lucid-backports from 1.0.1 to something more modern. I don't think depending on a third party Erlang outside of the Ubuntu ecosystem will be kosher.
The ESL package would be perfectly fine for a user who wanted to build CouchDB 1.3 from our release artifact on an Ubuntu 10.04 system.

huh? even Ubuntu LTS is now 12.04 Debian Wheezy might be a better
target. Meanwhile Couchdb could use whatever performance gains it can
get. I'm understanding logic here less and less.

imo, no. Requiring R13B04 means we don't support Ubuntu 10.04, even if there's a workaround (backporting).

I don't think we wait until 2015 to do this. Lucid itself will stick with 0.10.0, so it's only the lucid-backports repository that will be broken (or required to also backport a newer erlang).
So, on reflection, I'm ok with requiring R13B04 for the 1.3 release. We've gathered information ahead of time and know what will break. lucid-backports would need to backport R13B04 (from R13B03) which seems uncontroversial. It's also pretty unlikely that lucid-backports will bump at all, it's on 1.0.1 now after all (1.0.2, 1.0.3, 1.1.0, 1.1.1 and 1.2.0 have been released since).

10.04 LTS is not only still quite popular it is going to be supported until 29. April 2013 for desktops and until 29. April 2015 for servers. So dropping support for it wouldn't really be a good idea in my opinion.
