Tiles And Struts
Can I use a plugIn to Tiles ?

There are some way ?
Thanks

Thanks. That's what I thought.
I was wondering why the original poster id not want to use it.

I vote for fewer jar files. I have so many jars in my ear and war that when
weblogic uses jikes to compile my jsps, the maximum DOS command line length
is exceeded. I pre-compile my jsps with Ant and the paths are shorter than
in the server directory so it's not a problem now but I could be getting
close.
Seperating the commons stuff made sense because they are useful without
struts but I don't see enough benefit to breaking up struts.jar any more. I
suppose the build script could offer the complete struts.jar and also build
the other jars if people needed them broken out.

The core classes are already merged in, so you won't need a separate
tiles.jar. I've also merged in the creation of struts-tiles.tld (instead
of tiles.tld) in the same fashion as the others.

I understand the concept and the reasoning. My only concerns are:
* What is the harm in having classes in struts.jar that you do
not use? They're never loaded anyway, and the disk occupancy
is minimal. (And I'd bet nobody loads all the "core" classes
either.)
* I'm sure that I am not the only user that has lots of Ant build.xml
files with a "${struts.jar}" property referring to "the" JAR file
that needs to be added into a classpath, or copied into WEB-INF/lib.

Not for nothing, but maybe this would be a good time to also split the
distribution into two jars, struts-core.jar and struts-taglib.jar.
While the vast majority of Struts applications will use the taglibs, a
growing number are using other technologies. Expresso and Stxx offer
some slick XLS support for Struts. The Velocity View Tools are another
tag-free alternative. More are sure to follow.
Meanwhile, as we shift to the JSTL, our taglibs, as good as they are,
start to become more and more of an optional component. Since we are
making so many other JAR changes this cycle, it seems like a good time
to do this too.

We should come up with a brief developer's guide as has been done with
the other taglibs. We might be able to follow what Arron did for the
nested tag lib as a general outline.
Concept
Tag list
API notes (common properties and so forth)
Implementation notes (anything that might trip you up)
To round it out, I'm thinking we should insert a "portal page" in front
of the links to the Developer Guides, so we have a little bit more room
to work with. Here's a working sample for Tiles:
http://jakarta.apache.org/struts/userGuide/dev_tiles.html
So the Developer's Guide link for Tiles would go here, and then this
links to the package-summary in the API (among other things).
Something to talk about is whether to "deprecate" the template taglib or
not. Or maybe just move it under contrib, freeze it, and release as a
separate download. Having both of these in the main distribution is
going to confuse people. But at the same time, there's no reason to
scuttle it either.

The particular issue driving me on this is that jakarta.apache.org doesn't
support Tomcat, so anything we post there (right now, the Struts website
is basically a copy of struts-documentation.war) needs to be static.
It can certainly include links to other public sites that have example
apps running, but I think it is important for people to be able to read
enough to understand Tiles (or anything else in Struts) just from the
static content of the website that they can start building their own apps.
Including a tutorial app that actually *uses* Tiles in the Struts binary
distribution is, of course, an appropriate thing to do as well.

Yes it is.
Actually, I used to build a static version by extracting static portion and documentation
with an ant script doing some calls on requested pages. This is done in an ant script
building the website, distribution and so on.
I like to maintain the documentation in a dynamic website using Tiles and Struts, because I
found it more easy, and it helps maintaining consistency. I will check if I can continue in
this way: extracting static portion and inserting it in the struts part automatically.
Otherwise, I will follow actual struts way. The goal is to have a consistent documentation
all over struts site.

Now that we are folding Tiles into the core, I think it's legitimate to
build any processing you might need in a special request processor into
the standard one (suitably adding "if" checks for when Tiles isn't being
used), and even to add a struts-config element for the extra configuration
information.
I've merged the basic classes into the "src/share" subdirectory (merging
the correct license along the way -- we need to use the long form license
at the top of each source file). Now, it's just a matter of making Tiles
a "normal" part of Struts rather than an "add on".

In principle, they should be migrated into the "src" and "web" directories
as well, so that they are built in the same way as the other standard
ones.
One thing about the struts-documentation webapp that I like is that it's
100% static, so you can copy it to your disk (or to the Jakarta web site
:-) and browse even when there is no servlet container running. Would it
be possible to take the static portions of the Tiles documentation and
merge them into struts-documentation, and keep all the dynamic stuff that
requires execution in a tiles-tutorial or tiles-example webapp?

Re: Tiles And Struts
Posted by Cedric Dumoulin <ce...@lifl.fr>.
I am working in that direction : eliminating the servlet for Tiles with Struts1.1, and
have a request processor doing the job.
Tiles require a special RequestProcessor and an initialization in a plugin. To avoid
extra declaration in struts-config file, I would like to let the plugin set the
RequestProcessor class. This is actually not possible because configurations are frozen
before plugins are called. I propose to froze configurations after plugins
initialization. This will let a chance to plugin to set some configurations parameters.
Is there some objections ? If not, I will do the required modification, and provide
requested plugin.
What are you goals about the Tiles documentation, example, jar and war ? Do you thing
to separate them from main struts one as today, integrate them more deeply or remove them
?
If I know where we want to go I can help doing it ;-)

It's a miracle! ;)
Thanks for doing this, now I can use XMLSpy to validate my tiles definitions.

Ted, by the way, there is one file (news_2002_q1.html) that has 644

While we're on the subject of Struts and Tiles can
someone, with privilege to do so, add the Tiles dtd to
the jakarta.apache.org/dtds/ directory.
This is being referenced in the config files, but it
returns a 403 forbidden when you try to access it.

I want to go that way, once the basic integration is done. Ideally, the
standard RequestProcessor can be used, and any one-time initialization can
be done in a PlugIn. But I haven't looked deeply into how
TilesRequestProcessor differs from the standard one yet.
Cedric, any comments?

In practice, I find that if you only use a * single * Tiles definition
file (no comma-delimited list), then the stock 1.1 ActionServlet seems
to work just as well. This works with the Tiles example application as
well as my own.
Most of the code in the 1.1 ActionComponentServlet and
TilesRequestServlet seem to overlap.
Perhaps there's a way we could just use the processor in 1.1 and
eliminate the servlet subclass?

By using tiles ActionComponentServlet , no Struts functionalities are lost. You
gain one : the ability to use Tiles definitions names as Struts forward.
Note that Struts1.1 also require the TilesRequestProcessor to enable Tiles.

Just out of curiosity, what functionality is lost
by using tiles' ActionComponentServlet ?
Thanks

Re: Tiles And Struts

Hello,
For now, the Tiles plugin is not available.
If you use Struts1.1, I think you can use the definitions-config file without
ActionComponentServlet. In Struts 1.1, the servlet is only used to initialize the
tiles definition factory, which in turn read the config file. So, if you
initialize yourself the factory prior to any call to it (like <insert> or struts
forward do), you should be able to not use the ActionComponentServlet. Such
initialization can be done in a plugin.
Hope this help,
Cedric
