[Issue 127740] New: Printing is offset when printing on small pages

https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=127740

          Issue ID: 127740
        Issue Type: DEFECT
Summary: Printing is offset when printing on small pages
           Product: Writer
           Version: 4.1.5
          Hardware: All
                OS: macOS 10.12
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: Normal
          Priority: P5 (lowest)
         Component: printing
          Assignee: issues@openoffice.apache.org
          Reporter: apache@idiacomputing.com
  Target Milestone: ---

My wife uses a template to fill out her deposit tickets (due to hand tremor).
This worked fine for a long time, but recently she upgraded to OpenOffice 4.15
and it prints off-center, about 1/4" too high, on a Brother HL-3170CDW printer.
The deposit ticket is 3-1/4" by 7-3/8".

Fortunately she still had a copy of OpenOffice 3.2.0 installed, which prints
OK. I tried LibreOffice 6.0.2.1, and it has the same problem as OO 4.15. There
is definitely something wrong with printing small pages.

The source document file is too large for bugzilla, and has been uploaded to
https://ln.sync.com/dl/c287f98f0#twjzpv7w-jh6ivvh8-x5m6g9rc-cssftkzz

As you can see from this image, the printing is off when using a recent version
of OpenOffice.

I think not. However I think your conclusion that it is based on small
papersize is wrong, thus our test case does not reveal any result.

Please tell how did you create the document. We can then check each creation
phase for error.
My guess is that the distortion you experience has to do with positioning of
text over a picture.
It has nothing to do with paper size.

Also a approach could be to reconstruct the document in draw or impress and
check if you have the same print issue. There object placement might be
different.

*Prerequisites* :
 - Some blank small documents are available (on paper).
If no officially supplied docs are available some can be created using
samples on the Internet.
- Fillable digital documents are available - based on the paper variants.
- Printer is available.

Using the following environment and replication steps I WAS UNABLE to reproduce
the issue reported by the initial reporter.
For more info please check the notes section.

*Environment* :
- AUT: Writer from OpenOffice suite.
- Build versions: AOO420m1(Build:9800)-Rev. 1829211, AOO415m1(Build:9789) -Rev.
1817496, OOO320m12 (Build:9483).
- OS: MS Windows 7, MS Windows 10.
- Using 2 systems: One high-end performance, one entry-level performance.
- Printer: HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 3525 (Inkjet printer) with latests HP
drivers and FW.

*Repro steps* :
1. Using Writer open a fillable document.
2. Fill in the information in the available fields.
3. Using print option or CTRL+P kb shortcut open printing menu.
4. Correctly configure the printing job: add small paper documents to printer,
select correct paper size in printing menu (if not autodetected), select print
without background.
5. Commit the print job.
6. Verify print. Observe alignment.

*Actual results* :
Severe print alignment issues are visible on the small paper document between
the fields and printed information.

*Expected results* :
Small paper document has no (severe) alignment issues between fields and
printed information.

*Notes* :
- Depending on the printer quality and capabilities and the cuts of the small
paper document some small alignment issues could be visible - but these are not
caused by OpenOffice.
- As stated in the environment an Inkjet printer was used. Using an Laser
printer could yield different results. The printer used in the original report
laser based.
- As stated in the environment an Windows machines were used. Using a macOS
machine could yield different results.
This issue has been tested with other word editing software (MS Word and Libre
Office) but the issue was not reproducible.
- Also print as PDF tools were used in order to detect alignment issues at a
digital level - but the issue was not reproducible.
- Different sized fonts were used to fill in the fields of the digital
documents but the issue was not reproducible.
- Different sized small paper documents were but the issue was not
reproducible.
- Large size fillable documents (e.g. A4) were used but the issue was not
reproducible.
- Different orientation documents were used but the issue was not reproducible.
- Attached 3 samples that could be used to try to replicate the issue, both
empty variants (for creating the initial paper document) and fillable variants.
- Attached are 3 batches of samples obtained using the 3 versions of OO Writer
mentioned in the environment section.

I created the document in OpenOffice, version unknown. The image isn't printed,
but was added to the document to know where to put the text fields and how to
space the characters for the form.

The creation steps were (from memory) to
 - add the background image to represent the paper form on which it would be
printed
 - create text fields over the areas needed
 - adjust the font size and spacing until the characters aligned with the image

This seems straightforward and it worked until upgrading OpenOffice.

I'm not sure why testing draw or impress would be useful for investigating a
problem with writer.

Did you try printing the document I posted?

It's funny that it prints OK on 3.2.0 but not on 4.15 if it's not an OpenOffice
issue.
