Martin,
if you add httpclient-3.x.jar to Ivy's classpath the problem should be solved.
The OOM only occurs when Ivy uses the standard Java APIs.

Regarding the slow upload speed when using httpclient, could you provide more info?
(for instance the debug logging of httpclient)
