PFM font embedding problems.
Hi.
I am with joy using the FOP processor to generate PDF documents
from XSL FO documents.
I now have to embed a third party Postscript based font(a PFM file).
I have experienced problems with this embedding inside the PDF document.
Could someone give me a deep explanation on how to achive this, step by step?
I would be so thankful.
I really cant get it to work I think.
When attempting to open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0,
this message pops up:
"Unable to extract the embedded font 'StandardGroteskBSK-Regular'.
Some characters may not display or print correctly."
It then defaults to Helvetica. "Using Helvetica instead"
When attempting to open the PDF in Adobe Illustrator 10 (choosing File->Open),
this message pops up:
"The PDF File Format is having difficulties." (or something like that)
I have not yet achieved to open a FOP generated PDF in Illustrator 10 using that method at all.
But, if I choose to create a new document first, and then choose
File->Place
(or drag the file from the file explorer and drop it in this document area in Illustrator)
it succeeds and loads the content of the PDF.
When my PDF finally got into Illustrator, it actually showed the PDF with the correct fonts
(as the name "StandardGroteskBSK-Regular" in the font box)
So why do I get that
"Unable to extract the embedded font 'StandardGroteskBSK-Regular'.
Some characters may not display or print correctly."
from Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 ?
But, now, cells in my tables existing within this PDF document running in Illustrator 10,
are not correctly aligned. I use very simple tables in this document.
Besides, I have tried this with other fonts, using the same PDF document. The result is then perfect.
Could that have something to do with the calculations in the
"StandardGroteskBSK-Regular" XML font metrics file?
I have read that these calculations are only approximations of the actual values.
Do i have to manually alter this file then?
I am running Windows XP.
any help appreciated.
regards
Dennis, Grey Digital Oslo

Ok, thx
Is this a general AWT issue or something with FOP (the AWTRenderer)?
(which perhaps is solved in 0.91?)

Borders with 0.5pt in size renders improperly (0.20.5)
Posted by mk...@exceldata.com.
Hello,
I'm currently using FOP 0.20.5 (haven't had time to try out 0.90 / 0.91
yet), to print tables. My FO consists of cells with the following
structure:
<table-cell border-left-width="0.5pt" border-right-width="0.5pt"
border-top-width="0.5pt" border-bottom-width="0.5pt"
border-before-style="solid" border-before-color="#000000"
border-after-style="solid" border-after-color="#000000"
border-start-style="solid" border-start-color="#000000"
border-end-style="solid" border-end-color="#000000"
padding-top="0.6515805553926605mm" padding-bottom="0.6515805553926605mm"
padding-left="0.6515805553926605mm" padding-right="0.6515805553926605mm"
font-size="6.517pt" color="#000000" background-color="#B2C7DB"
text-align="left" column-number="5">
<block>Johannes Mortensen</block>
</table-cell>
To "fit" a table to a single page, some pre-FOP code executes, which
determines FOP column-widths and font-size from an input table (in this
case Swing) and reduces column-widths and font-sizes proportionally to
make the table "fit-to-page". However when doing this the borders
(previously of size 1pt) becomes very dominating (i.e. too thick), so I
wanted to reduce the border-width to 0.5pt.
This works nicely with the PDF renderer (i.e. the PDF looks good - borders
are thinner and complete), but the AWTRenderer (used for preview + print)
doesn't render it properly. The top + left border is drawn "inside" the
cell (i.e. part of cell background is visible on the outside of the
border), and the left/right borders doesn't connect to the bottom border
(on some cells).
Is this a known limitation of the AWT rendering or can anyone give me a
hint as to what I'm doing wrong?

I had the same problem with FOP 0.20.5 standalone. I hand-edited the xml font
metrics file to match the pfb and afm files for BoundBox etc. to no effect.
Not to suggest that this is always the cause, but I was passing the -noedit
parameter to FOP. When I removed the -noedit parameter and made no other change,
the font embedded correctly. When I added -noedit back, the font again failed to
embed.

Does Acrobat open the PDF without problems if you don't embed the font
(remove embed-file attribute)?

Step-by-step instructions described at
http://xml.apache.org/fop/fonts.html, but looks like you know it
already. Show us the font definition in your userconfig.xml and check if
FOP complains about anything in a debug trace.

Dennis,
an addition to Oleg's answer: I've posted a checklist a while ago that
describes how to tweak the values in the XML font metric file generated
by the PFM Reader. Yes, sometimes it's necessary to alter the generated
file. That will change when we have an AFM and an improved PFB parser.
