Roller 4.0 and Sun Java Application Server 9.1 Issue
Solaris 10 update 4
Sun Java Application Server 9.1 (i.e. GlassFish version 2.0)
MySQL 5.0.37
Java SDK 1.5
I am following the Roller installation guide and everything is smooth up
to the point where I deploy Roller and try to access it.
I get the following in server.log for Sun Application Server:

I get a 503 error at http://myserver:8080/roller which I am going to
assume is the end result of this error.
I'm not sure what is causing this error as I can deploy say hello.war
(GlassFish sample app) with no problem.
I Googled around, checked my setup method, etc and I haven't seen
anything about this issue or a remedy for it (if any).
Any pointers or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I agree with this. However, to deploy Roller on Geronimo with
roller-custom.properties, I *had* to put it in WEB-INF/classes. I
tried many other directories and it couldn't be found from any of
them. I even contacted the Geronimo list - WEB-INF/classes was their
recommendation and it worked. Probably just a Geronimo thing.

I don't recommend placing roller-custom.properties in WEB-INF/classes.
It's best to place it outside of the Roller context so that it is not
deleted when you redeploy the Roller WAR or install a newer version of
Roller.

Nate
I have Roller running on Solaris and Windows using Derby. Try my tutorial at
http://rreyes.corbitecso.com/?p=88 and see if it works for you. If that
works, then the problem could be your connectivity with mySQL.
On the other hand, I had problems too when I first installed it (try looking
for my post about a week ago) but in my case the problem was that I had
incorrect information in my roller-custom.properties (that by the way, I
also placed on WEB-INF/classes).
Hope this helps...

I can't explain that yet, but here's another question. Does the user
account that you are using to run SJAS have read/write permission to
all of the files in the domain1 directory and it's sub-directories?

Yowza... I'm stumped. I think we're gonna have to seek assistance from

You didn't mention your JDBC driver jar. Did you place the MySQL
driver jar in the SJAS lib directory?

Hi Nate,
I run on SJAS and I haven't run into this problem. But then again, I
always work off of a fresh install of SJAS with default settings and
without any apps installed but Roller.
The part of the stack trace below seems to indicate that your SJAS
install has some security policy setup. Is this a stock install of
SJAS or have you modified the security settings in some way?

Here is what I did:
cd /path/to/apache-roller-blah.zip
unzip apache-roller-blah.zip
cd apache-roller-blah/webapps/roller
jar cvf /somewhere/roller.war *
vi roller-custom.properties
installation.type=auto

The best place I've found to put roller-custom.properties (so it works
on multiple servers) is in WEB-INF/classes.

Re: Roller 4.0 and Sun Java Application Server 9.1 Issue
Posted by Nate Keegan <na...@cityofprescott.net>.
I placed roller-custom.properties in
/opt/SUNWappserver/appserver/lib/classes per the Roller install guide
File contents:
installation.type=auto
database.configurationTypd=jdbc
database.jdbc.driverClass=com.mysql.jdbc.Driver
database.jdbc.connectionURL=jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/rollerdb
database.jdbc.username=roller
database.jdbc.password=fooblat
mail.configurationType=properties
mail.hostname=mail.cityofprescott.org
