Will your project feature at ApacheCon North America 2010?

Dear PMC,

ApacheCon 2010 North America is just around the corner, and it's time
to roll out a program for this event! We'll be at the Westin Peachtree
Plaza in Atlanta, GA, from 1st-5th November. Will you be there?

If you'd like your project to be featured in the main conference
tracks, please discuss it with your project community. A schedule is
not needed at this time, but you have a coherent vision for a one day
(6 sessions) program. We are particularly interested in programs that
fit current themes, from Servers to Cloud Computing, from Search to
NoSQL, as well as Innovation and Emerging Technologies.

You'll also need to identify a track program organizer, who will be
responsible for liaising with the planners, as well as collecting the
session descriptions, speaker bios, and other programming information.
Your track organizer should email planners-2010-na@apachecon.com with
your project's intent to participate, before Sunday, March 21st.

Projects will be notified by the end of March as to whether their
proposal has been accepted, and full programming should be completed
by April 16th.

Note that the planning committee will review the proposed tracks, and
may offer feedback or specify necessary changes to ensure the success
of the event.

All accepted speakers (not co-presenters) qualify for general
conference admission and a minimum of two nights lodging at the
conference hotel. Additional hotel nights and travel assistance are
possible, depending on the number of presentations given and type of
assistance needed.

If you think main track programming isn't for you, don't worry! You
should expect to hear from us shortly about opportunities to present
Training Sessions, as well as evening Meetups and other events.

Looking forward to seeing you in Atlanta!

Your ApacheCon 2010 NA Planning Team

I'm sure each of our projects have a number of internal developments which we're also interested in sharing.

Absolutely! We already expected to have meta-tracks; essentially one room of the
Enterprise development resources, one room of Server technologies, one room of
Cloud - NoSQL - Persistence etc etc. Whoops - there went all the rooms :)

However, if you're interested in joining forces, let me know. I think it would help foster greater interactions between our projects and also result in a very interesting conference track.

+1 - several of these projects will have a track day, but this many wouldn't fit
and I'm sure many hadn't identified a day of content for the general public, but
want to present one or two talks.

Thank you!

Agreed - in fact it's better for the track if two Foo project presentations fit,
but there are five proposals. This means there's an opportunity to choose the
strongest programming, and also probably highlights an opportunity for a meetup
for the more obscure or less focused talk ideas.

We trust you are offering to be the liason/coordinator for these 'assorted'
track days? :)

In thinking about ApacheCon 2010, I began to wonder if there is interest in creating an "Enterprise Java" track for the conference. I think there is the potential for a lot of interesting content. Many of our projects are busy implementing JSR specs for Java EE6. Also, the OSGi Alliance EEG has created several EE-focuse specifications with more on the way. I'm sure each of our projects have a number of internal developments which we're also interested in sharing.

I'm guessing that some of our projects have already initiated their own track programs. Which I think is fine. I don't think it's a conflict to have technology specific tracks. However, if you're interested in joining forces, let me know. I think it would help foster greater interactions between our projects and also result in a very interesting conference track.

To help to start aggregating potential presentations, I've created a Wiki page -- http://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/GMOxPMGT/ApacheCon+NA+2010+--+Enterprise+Java+Track

At this point, we do not need to identify specific presentations. But we do need to insure that there is sufficient interest.

If I've left out any projects who you think might be interested in participating, please feel free to pass this along...

Since we plan to publish first Tomcat 7 release within the
next few weeks, IMHO Tomcat PMC could gather enough material
again for a full day session.

The next ApacheCon is coming up. They are doing the same approach as
last time, where projects organize into full day tracks (see more
below). I'm thinking we might have a hard time filling a complete
track, but we might collaborate with other projects on filling some
sessions. What do you think, anyone interested in giving a talk?

Thinking in terms of incubating projects, we have two directions to think
about. For a project like TrafficServer with a strong affinity to the
likely httpd, Tomcat "Servers" theme, it probably makes sense to ask for
a slot in that track. I'd like to see the httpd day cover everything from
"What is httpd 2.4 [3.0?]" due out around that time, all the way to a
TrafficServerm session. Hopefully even experienced admins will walk away
from such a day feeling they learned a whole lot about what's going on in
the industry and what's coming up.

Look at your own podling and consider if a session or two would fit the
theme of an existing top level project? If so, lets start a dialog at that
related project :) But this won't be a solution for some podlings which
don't have an obvious peer at the foundation already.

There are plenty of podlings who are far enough along to consider a well
thought-out "Innovation and Emerging Technologies" day, but not one with
a random assortment of 6 talks. I'd like to see a program of related
podlings which make sense to (generally) the same audience. And when
I say 'podlings', I also mean recently graduated projects. WDYAT?
What six talks would fit best together?

I'm willing to actively help create the incubator track and find homes for
other podlings who wish to present, but would really appreciate a co-host
focusing strictly on an incubator day, since I'll have other programming
responsibilities, too.

The committee discussed and discarded the idea of ressurecting FastFeather,
we would rather see a solid handful of well crafted longer talks than some
Heinz 57 assortment of rapid-fire, short presentations. The more thorough
talks should be more useful to the

But if we want some other incubator activity, besides the hackthon, we can
certainly kick around ideas. TrafficServer, for example, did a meetup at
ApacheCon last year.

Am i reading that correctly? ... there isn't going to be any centrallized
CFP, just proposals put forth by the PMCs (who are responsible for
building up a full itinerary/schedule) ?

(I'm not saying i think this is good/bad either way, i'm just trying to
make sure we know what's expected, since last year there was some
confusion on this ... particularly in terms of gatharing proposals from
speakers, and how flexible the schedule could be in terms of "everything
must be in 1 hour blocks")

: Looks like we only get one day this year.

That section was worded oddly, and may also have just been a
misscommunication -- there may just be an expectation that PMCs commit to
filling at least 1 full day (not partial days)

It would also be good to verify if there are going to be co-located (free)
MeetUps this year

I'm happy to help review proposals and discuss schedule.

As usual i'm happy to give a Solr intro/overview/demo if desired (and as
usual i'd love having more then 50 minutes to do it in)

Hey Guys,

I'd be happy to organize something for Tika for ApacheCon. A presentation maybe to start out?

Hi,
as already pointed out by Nick on private@, there's been an invitation
from planners@ to submit a proposal for each project to be presented
at ApacheCon North America 2010, taking place in Atlanta, GA, 1st-5th
November.
As suggested by Nick, POI could better fit in a general track, such as
a content related one; the same we did last year in Oakland.
I'd volunteer with pleasure on being a liaison with other content
related projects @ Apache and seeing if anybody is interested in
proposing a new Content Technology Track (any new idea on the name?)

First thing I'd contact the Jackrabbit and Sling ML's that kicked off
the idea last year.
Cheers,
