I was struggling with a similar problem. Thanks to an excellent explanation
from David, I believe that we can solve this by extending from
AbstractInstancePortlet rather than AbstractPortlet.
In additiona, other stock portlets, such as JspPortlet and WebPagePortlet,
should also extend from AbstractInstancePortlet (unless they already do so).
