[Installer] Should the log file be "user friendly"

Hi,

The new installer is basically running an approximation of Ant. Therefore
the log file is pretty much an exact replica of what our Linux users (or
anybody else) will see if they actually use Ant to install the Flex SDK.
One person who tried the new installer thinks the log should be more "user
friendly" like the old installer log. I thought Ant output was sufficient
since it is more for us diagnosing install issues than users diagnosing
those issues.

What do other folks think?

Well my point was adding it to the installer, not having them go back to
the website. Like after the installations done, have a couple links to the
users nabble for user support or such.

As Mark mentioned, the dev@ and users@ mailing lists can also be viewed as
a forum by registering at Nabble. Apache does not use forums, only
mailing lists.

Instructions for the Nabble forums are on this page [1]

What about a forum? I used to visit the adobe flex forum a lot before the apache transfer. It looked quite good and there was a lot of traffic.
Couldn't it be transferred to flex.apache?

IMHO, inviting flex users to the dev list might not work, because of the highly technical discussions there.
Most people will get overwhelmed with the list traffic I think.
An installer should just do what we expect: install the sdk, no?
The 'how to get involved' is easy to find on our site.

Also, too many people on the dev list might use it as a help line, which isn't its purpose.

That's fine - they are most likely used to it. Windows developers may not be.

I'm now confused on what you'd like to see changed. It would be simpler
and generate shorter logs to just make nicer ant target names.

I'll hold off on changing anything here to see if others have opinions.

Yes, I can. Can you please file a JIRA ticket against my name with the
requirements?

Thanks,
Om

There's a couple of things about the Ant output:
1) It isn't in complete sentences.
2) It lists target names even if the body of the target is skipped so on a
Mac install it will still mention Windows-only targets.

For #1, we could just add more "echo" statements and have the installer
only log echo statements.

Or to only fix #2, we could tweak some ant target names to make it clear
they are conditional such as "air-setup-win-if-on-windows".

I would expect them to contact the users list and we'd still help them
there.

And you mentioned we may need to change the way we record successful
installs so it tracks FlexJS and other packages separately from the SDK.
Om, can you do that?

Thanks,

Hi,

User installing the SDK need a understandable log if something goes wrong and they may not be familiar with ant. The log is not just for our use IMO.

Not all users would be willing to contact the dev list for help if something goes wrong with the installer (for starter they are unlikely to be signed up it).

A useful stat would be to record failed installs in google analytics - so we know what % of people are having issues and possibly do something about it.

Thanks,
Justin
