[jira] [Created] (AVRO-1371) Support of data encryption for Avro file

Jerry Chen created AVRO-1371:
--------------------------------

Summary: Support of data encryption for Avro file
                 Key: AVRO-1371
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/AVRO-1371
             Project: Avro
          Issue Type: Improvement
    Affects Versions: 1.8.0
            Reporter: Jerry Chen

Avro file format is widely used in Hadoop. As data security is getting more and more attention in Hadoop community, we propose to improve Avro file format to be able to handle data encryption and decryption.

Similar to compression and decompression, encryption and decryption can be implemented with Codec, a concept that already exists in Avro. While Codec context handling was not considered because compression codecs rarely need contexts but some simple global configuration parameters. To support encryption and decryption, this work needs to extend the codec with the ability to handle codec context such as the encryption keys.

Avro supports multiple language implementations. This is the umbrella JIRA for this work and the implementation work for each language will be addressed in sub tasks.
