Login upon confirmation of email address

Hi,

I have a requirement that, the user needs to confirm his email before
getting access to the site.  
How to do this?  I see that LoginPortlet is eventually checking
SECURITY_CREDENTIAL table fields
IS_ENABLED, IS_EXPIRED fields.  Can this be done with any configuration
change?
