There is no advantage to using one IRC nick over another, and suggesting that there is creates additional work and confusion for infrequent IRC users.

Explicitly link to web IRC client to make this more obvious.

The secretary and other admins *already have* cloaks, and so don't need this information.

Once again, good documentation considers the *actual audience* of this document, and gives them only the information that they need *in the moment*, with links to further information. Information about cloaks (particularly without any hint as to what a cloak is) is superfluous here.

   Not sure I agree.

If members use their ASF ids as nicks, it is likely easier for other people to recognise them.
Also the patch drops the link to cloaking, which can be important for privacy (and for karma).

On review, the original text says:

Cloaks for Libera Chat are available in committers/docs/libera-cloaks.txt

There is no notion give of what a Cloak is, or why someone would want one. There's also no notion of what "committers/docs/libera-cloaks.txt" is - that's not a URL. It's not a reference to anything obvious. It assumes knowledge, but gives no way to obtain that knowledge. I would strenuously challenge the notion that the text I removed was *in any way* useful to someone who didn't *already* know the information. Without a reference to what a cloak is, or what "committers/docs/libera-cloaks.txt" is, this is just noise, and absolutely *should* be removed unless it is enhanced with a link to definitions.

If I was not already an IRC user, and read that paragraph, I would roll my eyes at the gatekeeper-ness of it, and just wait for my ballot to arrive.

But like I said, I hope that it's moot by this time next year, and will be devoting my further involvement in this topic to ensuring that it is.

Your stop-energy around improving the existing process is perplexing and discouraging.

I have enhanced the document in committers/docs/libera-cloaks.txt to make it a tiny bit more accessible, but more could be done there.

There is no "linked documentation" on cloaks. There was, instead, a reference to a doc in svn (assuming that the reader knows that it's a reference to a doc in svn, which they likely do not) which *also* doesn't define what a cloak is. As such, any reference of cloaks in this paragraph is simply noise that does not provide useful information that the audience needs in the moment.

I completely disagree. Having people recognize one another is not a goal of the meeting. The meeting is a legal formality. Adding the complexity of encouraging people to register a cloak for a service that they use literally one hour a year is completely antithetical to the goal of simplifying meeting attendance. The focus should be on simplicity, not on "here's how to be a better IRC user" - which the target audience doesn't care about. If the reader cares about IRC, they already have a cloak. If they don't then they have no idea what a cloak is. Consider the audience, and the actual goal of this document - to simplify meeting attendance.

The notion that meeting attendees need "karma" is ludicrous. The meeting is not a social gathering or game. It's a business function.

But, fine, Ok. Whatever. Here's hoping our next meeting isn't on IRC and this is all moot.

We had more than a dozen people on the members@ thread request this change, and not a one of them stepped up to take the 45 seconds to make the change.

The cloak is vital for karma. It is also important for privacy, as otherwise the user host name is exposed.
Whilst user hostnames are exposed to web servers etc, it is not normally exposed to other web users.
AIUI, without the cloak, anyone on IRC can see your hostname.
I think members have the right to be told this.

The secretary and other admins need karma to be able to control the meeting.

If the linked documentation on cloaks is not clear, then that needs to be addressed.
