Dan, how did you disable the socket test?

Dan,

When I ran the EngineLifecycleTest on my native linux system, it passed
with Willem's stuff.

But, run in a VM from maven, it fails with Willem's NPE!

I'm about to see if I can get Eclipse running in that VM and try it
again.

You said that you'd done something to duck this set of issues, What did
you do, and how could I un do it?

There is a system property that is set to not close the ports.   See the 
surefire configuration in trunk/parent/pom.xml.   

Most likely, in your test setup, unset that system property.
