[jira] [Commented] (OAK-7571) [DirectBinaryAccess][DISCUSS] New
module for direct binary access
[ https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/OAK-7571?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=16519936#comment-16519936 ]
Matt Ryan commented on OAK-7571:
--------------------------------
To kick off the discussion I'll throw out some comments I've collected so far.
Arguments in favor:
* Using a separate module would allow it to be released on an independent schedule. We don't currently do that with any Oak modules but we could start with this one.
* Releasing independently would allow us to declare a stable release before the next stable release of all of Oak, which should facilitate Sling integrations much earlier.
* This will avoid API changes to existing Oak modules.
* This functionality is not universal (only works if certain data stores are configured) so it shouldn't be part of a general-purpose API.
Arguments against:
* This functionality represents a potentially better (more scalable, better performing) way of uploading and downloading binaries since it allows external clients to do I/O directly instead of sending that I/O through Oak. This functionality may not be universal, but it should be - and could be with an enhancement to OakFileDataStore. So we should start off just by enhancing the existing API.
* How do we secure the interactions if a session is not involved?
I'm sure there are more ;)

> The [original pull request|https://github.com/apache/jackrabbit-oak/pull/88] adds API changes to oak-jcr to enable the feature. Would it be better instead to create a new module supporting the direct access feature?
