I found the cause: the 3 arial fonts that are in org/apache/pdfbox/resources/ttf/ are broken.

If I replace them in pdfbox\resources\PDFBox_External_Fonts.properties like this

Arial-BoldItalicMT=c:/Windows/Fonts/ARIALBI.TTF
Arial-BoldMT=c:/Windows/Fonts/ARIALBD.TTF
ArialMT=C:/Windows/Fonts/ARIAL.TTF
UNKNOWN_FONT=C:/Windows/Fonts/ARIAL.TTF

then I get a nicely rendered image. The "J" is fine now, and the "Was ihnen geboten wird" subtitle looks much better.
