#3876 rebased, with a minor change to the test, and tested locally

against azure cardiff with `-Dparallel-tests=abfs -DtestsThreadCount=10`

+1, i am happy the fix (and disappointed with myself that i didn't find this, as it means I wasn't running as many tests as I thought i was)

if yetus is happy i will merge this. local test run triggered two known failures
