Which operating system are you using?

I had a similar problem with WebSphere on Windoze. I've got a web service and a web application both wrapped up in a war file, inside an ear file.

WebSphere expands the ear and war files. If I tried to redeploy my app, sometimes the new versions of some files wouldn't get picked up because of file locking. I'd have to shut down WebSphere (and sometimes even reboot) in order to delete the old files.

I believe this is more of a windoze issue than an app server one. It sometimes comes up using applications, when you get a message saying "Can't delete the file because it's in use", often when you know it's not in use. I've never had that kind of problem on Linux or Solaris.

cheers,
md
