Please reconsider making getScanner() public or providing an equivalent method
in a non-internal class. We use Xerces in an open source XML-based text
retrieval implementation, and I feel that relatively direct access to the byte
offsets is an essential feature for such applications as text indexing where
efficiency is critical. I understand that there is a theoretical workaround by
translating from line/column data, but this is extremely convoluted in some
situations. I originally tried to use that approach in our project, but I could
not find a reasonably efficient way to do it, which led me to use getScanner()
based on advice from the mailing list. Thank you very much for your time and
suggestions.
