[VOTE] hadoop 0.23.6 release

I've created a release candidate (RC0) for hadoop-0.23.6 that I would like
to release.

This release is a sustaining release with several important bug fixes in
it.

The RC is available at:
http://people.apache.org/~tgraves/hadoop-0.23.6-candidate-0/
The RC tag in svn is here:
http://svn.apache.org/viewvc/hadoop/common/tags/release-0.23.6-rc0/

The maven artifacts are available via repository.apache.org.

Please try the release and vote; the vote will run for the usual 7 days.

Unfortunately I'm out of the office next week and not sure about internet
access so if there are any issues I'll spin a new rc when I get back.

thanks,
Tom Graves

Using the link on http://hadoop.apache.org/mailing_lists.html I've emailed general-unsubscribe@hadoop.apache.org several times attempting to unsubscribe from this mailing list, but continue to receive emails.

Could you let me, and all of the other people sending emails containing the word "UNSUBSCRIBE" how to successfully unsubscribe?

+1. Verified checksums and signatures. Built from source, deployed a single
node cluster and ran a couple of simple examples without problems.

- Built native from source (Ubuntu works too!)
- Ran several hadoop native jobs on one box cluster

+1 (non-binding)

- Verified signatures and checksums
- Built from source, deployed pseudo-distributed cluster and ran some
example jobs successfully
- Deployed pseudo-distributed cluster from binary tarball and ran some
example jobs successfully

Note that during testing I discovered the web proxy server doesn't
startup successfully due to a missing directory and filed YARN-363. I'm
not considering that a blocker since the missing directory can be
created manually or the user can run the web proxy as part of the RM as
a workaround.

Thanks to everyone for trying this release.

The vote has passed with 12 +1s (5 binding and 7 non-binding) and no -1s.

I'll push the release out today.

Re: [VOTE] hadoop 0.23.6 rc1 release

Posted by Chris Nauroth <cn...@hortonworks.com>.
I had not set hadoop.security.group.mapping in my config. I was inheriting
ShellBasedUnixGroupsMapping from core-default.xml.

I'm wondering if this is something a bit different. I only see the problem
when running "hadoop fs -cat". I haven't seen it from any other command.

For further testing, I did try
setting JniBasedUnixGroupsMappingWithFallback in my config to see what
would happen. When I do that, every command I run displays the warning.
Switching back to ShellBasedUnixGroupsMapping, the warning only appears
for "hadoop fs -cat" and no other commands.

Thanks,
--Chris

+1 (non-binding), assuming the issue I mentioned earlier about the new
warning output is not considered a blocker.

I verified checksum and signature for hadoop-0.23.6.tar.gz. I ran a set of
Ubuntu VMs: NN, RM, 2 * DN, 2 * NM, and 2NN. I tested multiple HDFS
interactions and MapReduce jobs. Everything worked as expected. The only
potential problem I noticed was that new warning output.

Thanks,
--Chris

Do you have the following config set?

<name>hadoop.security.group.mapping</name>
<value>org.apache.hadoop.security.JniBasedUnixGroupsMappingWithFallback</va
lue>

Setting that was the only way we could reproduce that warning.

If that is the case the work around is simply change that back to
org.apache.hadoop.security.ShellBasedUnixGroupsMapping or have native
libraries so I don't think it would be a blocker. Unless others disagree.

Thanks,
Tom

I'm testing the RC without the native libs, and I'm seeing warning output
to stderr on some shell commands, similar to what is reported in HDFS-4427.
(See example below.) Is this a known issue for the release?

[VOTE] hadoop 0.23.6 rc1 release

Posted by Thomas Graves <tg...@yahoo-inc.com>.
I've created another release candidate (RC1) for hadoop-0.23.6 that I
would like
to release.

This release is a sustaining release with several important bug fixes in
it. It also contains fixes for the issues found in rc0 - YARN-354,
HDFS-4426, and HADOOP-9255

The RC is available at:
http://people.apache.org/~tgraves/hadoop-0.23.6-candidate-1/
The RC tag in svn is here:
http://svn.apache.org/viewvc/hadoop/common/tags/release-0.23.6-rc1/

The maven artifacts are available via repository.apache.org.

Please try the release and vote; the vote will run for the usual 7 days.

thanks,
Tom Graves

-1, secondary namenode won't stay up due after HADOOP-9181. The 2NN's main fires off a daemon thread and relied on the http server not running as a daemon, so the 2NN exits immediately.

Thanks Sid, sounds like I'll have to resin so I will make sure to clean up
those files.

+1.
Verified checksums.
Built from source, deployed a single node cluster and ran a couple of
examples with no issues.

The src tar does contain a bunch of extra "pom.versionsBackup" files, but I
don't think that should affect the release.

Thanks

Jon,

Can you be more specific, is it just failing on Ubuntu or other since it
built fine for me on rhea?

Thanks,
Tom

Again the native builds failing in 23.5 are still failing in 23.6, though
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HADOOP-7868 is incorporated. If you
are respinning this release, perhaps this can be looked into.

+1 I brought it up and ran a few sanity tests. Everything seems to be
working OK.
