Ok, tried that. Now I get...
error: Failed dependencies
perl(Config::IniFiles) >= 2.27 is needed by
subversion-tools-0.25.0-6434
httpd-mmn = 20020628 is needed by (installed) mod_perl-1.99_07-5
httpd-mmn = 20020628 is needed by (installed) mod_python-3.0.1-3
httpd-mmn = 20020628 is needed by (installed) php-4.2.2-17.2
libapr.so.0 is needed by (installed) mod_perl-1.99_07-5
libaprutil.so.0 is needed by (installed) mod_perl-1.99_07-5
This is on a vanilla RH9 install with the openssl096b-0.9.6b-6.i386 package
installed (required for libssl.so.2 and libcrypto.so.2).

List them all at once; rpm -Uvh *.rpm.

Reduced the number of hoops in my idiot's guide by replacing the whole
cpanflute2 section (four separate steps) with one call to apt-get install
perl-Config-IniFiles
apt-get rocks!
> Now to get a repository going, but I have the Subversion Book for that.
I've got that going now too. Now to set up a fresh RH9 box at work using my
idiot's guide and give it a stress test on a large directory tree of game
data.
The latest version of my idiot's guide...
Install Red Hat 9 in Server configuration. Make sure that mod_perl, mod_php
and mod_python are not installed as part of the Web Server category of
packages. This is because the upgrade to httpd-2.0.47 fails due to
dependency errors with these packages.
Download apt-get
http://ftp.freshrpms.net/pub/freshrpms/redhat/9/apt/apt-0.5.5cnc6-fr1.i386.r
pm
Install apt-get (remember that you must be logged in as root, ie. su root)
# rpm -Uvh apt-0.5.5cnc6-fr1.i386.rpm
First you must update the packages that apt-get knows about
# apt-get update
Get the latest perl-Config-IniFiles package
# apt-get install perl-Config-IniFiles
Get the latest perl-CGI package (required by subversion-tools)
# apt-get install perl-CGI
Download the RPMs for Subversion (all except devel RPMs)
http://summersoft.fay.ar.us/pub/subversion/i386/subversion-latest/redhat-9.x
/
Now you can update Subversion
# rpm -Uvh *.rpm
Subversion should now be successfully installed.

Ok, decided to give it a quick go before running off to work.
# apt-get install perl-CGI
worked fine and got the latest version, fixing the dependency errors.
apt-get is such a little gem. Red Hat should make it the default package
tool. So now
# rpm -Uvh *.rpm
on the Subversion RPMs works fine. All installed. Woohoo! Not really that
many hoops to jump through to get Subversion installed. The trick is
knowing _which_ hoops to jump through.
Now to get a repository going, but I have the Subversion Book for that.
Thanks for your help.

I had no idea there was such a thing as a CPAN shell. I'll give that a go
tonight.

So -U works for new installations as well as upgrades?

Are you familiar with the CPAN shell? Invoke with "perl -MCPAN -e shell".
Once set up (it asks you some questions), you can do such things as "i
CGI::Carp" and get info, which will tell you that CGI::Carp is included in
the same tarball as CGI.
grepping for "use CGI" in the subversion source shows that those modules are
only used by a couple of supplementary scripts. Either --nodeps, or try and
"apt-get install perl-CGI", or build a package with cpanflute2.

It seemed to have been installed to /usr/local, but removing that did not
help. I ended up blowing away the whole installation of RH9 and starting
from scratch.

perl,

After the new installation of RH9 was completed (making sure that mod_perl,
mod_python and mod_php were not installed), I followed my complete idiot's
guide and have now successfully got Config-IniFiles-2.38 installed.
Downloaded the Subversion RPMs once again and did a test update.
# rpm -Uvh --test *.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
perl(CGI) >= 2.89 is needed by subversion-tools-0.25.0-6434
perl(CGI::Carp) >= 1.24 is needed by subversion-tools-0.25.0-6434
I had a look at CPAN and found that there are countless modules for CGI and
Carp, but none that have CGI and Carp in their name. Which modules do I
need now and how are you supposed to discern the required module filenames
from those error messages?
This is my idiot's guide so far. It works right up to the 'update
Subversion' step.
The Complete Idiot's Guide to Installing a Subversion 0.25.0 Server on Red
Hat 9
Install Red Hat 9 in Server configuration. Make sure that mod_perl, mod_php
and mod_python are not installed as part of the Web Server category of
packages. This is because the upgrade to httpd-2.0.47 fails due to
dependency errors with these packages.
Download apt-get
http://ftp.freshrpms.net/pub/freshrpms/redhat/9/apt/apt-0.5.5cnc6-fr1.i386.r
pm
Install it (remember that you must be logged in as root, ie. su root, to
install RPMs)
# rpm -ivh apt-0.5.5cnc6-fr1.i386.rpm
First you must update the packages that apt-get knows about
# apt-get update
Now use apt-get to download and install cpanflute2
# apt-get install perl-RPM-Specfile
Download the Config-IniFiles-2.38 module from CPAN
http://www.cpan.org/authors/id/W/WA/WADG/Config-IniFiles-2.38.tar.gz
Use cpanflute2 to compile the RPMs for Config-IniFile-2.38
# cpanflute2 --buildall Config-IniFiles-2.38.tar.gz
This created three RPMs, but you only need one of them. Now we update
perl-Config-IniFiles
# rpm -Uvh perl-Config-IniFiles-2.38-8.i386.rpm
Download the RPMs for Subversion into a directory
http://summersoft.fay.ar.us/pub/subversion/i386/subversion-latest/redhat-9.x
/
Change to the directory you downloaded the packages to and update Subversion
# rpm -Uvh *.rpm

OK, I've now got a RH9 install up and running to refer to.
First, where did the perl you built get installed to? If it was entirely
under /usr/local, and you have not built any other software from source
yourself and installed it there, you may want to just remove the entire
contents of /usr/local. If it installed to /usr, then fully cleaning up the
mess is almost impossible.
Second, if Archive::Tar was available before make installing that new perl,
but isn't now, then that is quite possibly the issue. I'm hoping that it did
install to /usr/local, so you can easily remove it.

Too late. It was make installing while I was asleep. I found
Config-IniFiles-2.38.tar.gz at CPAN, downloaded it and now cpanflute2 gives
the following error
Can't locate Archive/Tar.pm in @INC
Is this because I did a make install on perl-5.8.0? If so, how do I fix
this now?

Stop! There is no need to rebuild perl!
You just need one individual module.
Get Config-IniFiles-2.38.tar.gz from CPAN, and run:
cpanflute2 --buildall Config-IniFiles-2.38.tar.gz

Ok, getting a bit further now. Let's forget cpanflute2 because Makefile.PL
just does not exist in the perl tarball. So using the instructions in the
INSTALL file that came in the tarball gets me a bit further. Perl is now in
the middle of a make and it's late so I'm off to bed.

I found the discussion thread I believe you are referring to. I joined the
list after that discussion had taken place. Has anyone realised that the
mailing list archives are not sorted by date/time? So as suggested in that
thread I used apt-get to download and install cpanflute2 (apt-get is such a
wonderful little tool that just seems to simply work).
# apt-get install perl-RPM-Specfile
Ok, this installed cpanflute2 without any fuss at all. Next I had to find
out what CPAN was. Why is so much knowledge simply assumed of the newcomer
when it comes to Linux? Found it at http://www.cpan.org and downloaded the
stable release of perl as the site strongly recommended (stable.tar.gz).
Next I tried to build the RPMs as per the cpanflute2 discussion thread.
# cpanflute2 --buildall stable.tar.gz
Besides the warning that compression is not available, it complained that it
could not parse the module or version name from the filename. Ok, so I go
through a few more hoops at CPAN and find perl-5.8.0.tar.gz, download it and
try again.
# cpanflute2 --buildall perl-5.8.0.tar.gz
This results in the process starting, but then it falls over with
+ perl Makefile.PL PREFIX=/var/tmp/perl-perl-5.8.0-8-root/usr
Can't open perl script "Makefile.PL": No such file or directory
error: Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.15550 (%build)

Uninstalling mod_perl, mod_php and mod_python removed those dependency
errors. Hopefully the system will still work without those modules. Now I
just have to get Perl updated.

I'm not implying that the barriers are caused by Subversion. It is RPM that
seems to be raising them. The only joy I have found so far is apt-get for
RH9. Everyting I have asked of it has simply worked so far. With the
standard operating procedure for RPM being so difficult for newcomers, I am
very surprised that apt-get has not been more widely accepted by the Red Hat
community.

At this stage after hitting so many barriers, I don't think it is
overreacting at all. How many other people have tried to install Subversion
0.24.2 or 0.25.0 on a fresh installation of RH9? Surely I'm not the only
one to have all these issues. I am noting down every hoop I've had to jump
through into a complete idiot's guide to installing Subversion 0.25.0 on Red
Hat 9, if not only to serve as a guide for myself if I have to go through
this again in the future.

These messages? OK, clarifying: There are 2 issues here. First line: You
need the Config::IniFiles perl module. The whole cpan2rpm / cpanflute2 issue
has been discussed recently here.
All the rest of the lines are saying that the upgrade of apache you are
trying to install is incompatible with your installed mod_perl, mod_python
and php packages. You may be able to simple uninstall those packages. If you
need to use them, you will need to locate or build versions compatible with
the new apache version.

This is really RPM standard operating procedure. If it is a barrier, it
isn't one erected by Subversion. It's also a vital skill for working with
Red Hat and similar distros.

Yes, I have not recompiled any of the packages that *depend* on apache
(httpd). I will leave that to other users at the moment. To work around
that at the moment just install the httpd with the "--nodeps" option (but
that will very likely "break" the packages that depend on it.
Unfortunately, RedHat hasn't yet updated to the post 2.0.40 series of
apache servers and there was a binary incompatable change in 2.0.41 which
means everything depending on apache (httpd) will have to be recompiled.

Well, I guess possibly, depending on what you are using it for and what
other packages you need. Believe me, it was a *LOT* harder (at least
for me) before the RPM packages were created (which was one major
reason I created them....I hate having to manually go through a long
drawn out compile process with lots of dependencies). The more packages
that depend on apache (httpd) then the harder it gets. I'm not using any of
the php stuff on my subversion servers at the moment so upgrading is very
easy for me (typically less than 15 minutes).
Of course over time it is getting easier and as soon as RedHat updates to
the post 2.0.41 series packages it will be lots easier for people using
packages that depend on apache (httpd).
Of course, the RPMS could always be made better and I'm slowly working to
make them better.
Patches welcome. :-)

Kind of, but not a great deal. Steven Brown previously suggested using
'rpm -Uvh *.rpm' (all required packages are in the one directory), and I got
the perl, python and php related dependency failures as described in my most
recent message.
It seems to be a lot of hacking and manual labour just to get Subversion
updated on RH9. This is a large (insurmountable) barrier to newcomers. I'm
getting more tempted to pay for a new WinXP license. I know it's going to
work there with no dependency issues.

Subversion 0.25.0 is a big change in that I'm now doing what Redhat is
(will be) doing. I ported their RAWHIDE httpd-2.0.45 to httpd-2.0.47.
They broke out APR/APR-UTIL into separate packages.
So the answer to your question is that you will have to either "rpm -Uvh
all-required-packages" at once or piecemeal them by using "--nodeps" to
temporarily ignore dependencies. If you do that you might have to "rpm -e
--nodeps package" temporarily until you get the other package installed
that fulfills those dependencies.
Does that help?

Sorry to be a pain, but how do we install the RPMs? I'm new to RPMs and
RH9. Is there any particular order that they have to be installed in? Any
particular command-line parameters that are we need?
I test an update of apr using...
# rpm -Uvh --test apr-0.9.4-0.1.i386.rpm
error: Failed dependencies
subversion < 0.20.1-2 conflicts with apr-0.9.4-0.1
Ok, so I gather that subversion needs to be updated before apr then.
# rpm -Uvh --test subversion-0.25.0-6434.i386.rpm
error: Failed dependencies
apr >= 0.9.4 is needed by subversion-0.25.0-6434
...and several other dependency errors.
So apr needs a later version of subversion, but the later version of
subversion needs that version of apr? Seems to be a circular dependency.
Or am I on completely the wrong track here?

As of Subversion 0.25.0 I've compiled three sets of packages, each on
their own distribution. Up until now, the RedHat 8.0 Subversion packages
would work on RedHat 9 (with a the backward compatable openssl096b
package) but I hadn't gotten Subversion and supporting packages built on
RedHat 9.
Now that everything is compiled and built on RedHat 9, you shouldn't need
the "magic" backward compatable openssl096b package because, it should
just work fine with the RH9 openssl (0.9.7a) package.
Does that make sense?
Does that answer your question?

Do you also have the openssl package that is required for RH9? I'm having a
hard time trying to find the right one. It would be mighty handy if it was
at that URL as well since it is a required package.
