failing to build xerces-1_2_0...

Platform: Sun SPARC
OS:	  Solaris 8
Compiler: gcc-2.95.2
XERCES:	  xerces-1_2_0

I set JDK12BIN to /usr/java1.2/bin and typed make. It trundled along
for an hour then exits with:

It seems to have built a couple of jar files in the bin directory (but
left them readable only by root) but no docs. Without the docs I
haven't a clue about what I should be doing.

Any ideas gratefully received.
