Open a dataBinding example. Delete the documentDataSource tags, and run the application.
An error pops up saying:
Exception: TypeError - xap.data.bridge.dataFrameworkBridge has no properties
This error doesn't help explain what is wrong

A few current (as of 29-01-07) error messages are attached in "DS_error_messages.txt". They are still not exceptionally helpful, but are more informative than before---notably (for the case originating this bug report, no data source at all):
Exception:Bad attribute with name dataSource and value myDataSource on element <binding xmlns="http://openxal.org/core/data" id="employeeCount" dataSource="myDataSource" select="concat('# Items: ',count(/employees/employee))"/> because of Exception: TypeError - _10a.messages has no properties
...---most especially the first line (which could be improved with quotes around the attribute name and value), and...
