[users@httpd] dbd mysql segmentation fault in 2.2.6

After quite a bit of trouble I finally got the dbd mysql compiled but
now as soon as I put the "DBDriver mysql" directive into the httpd.conf
file I get endless Segmentation Fault messages in the error log. I set
the LogLevel to debug but that doesn't help any. Any suggestions?
Below is my DBDriver call:

DBDriver mysql

#Connection string: database name and login credentials
DBDParams "host=mysql.my.domain.com dbname=stats user=stats password=stats"

#Parameters for Connection Pool Management
DBDMin  1
DBDKeep 2
DBDMax  10
DBDExptime 60

#Authentication Section
<Directory /home/websites/my.domain.com/htdocs/stats>
    #mod_auth configuration for authn_dbd
    Options All
    AllowOverride none
    AuthType Basic
   AuthName "Statistics"
    AuthBasicProvider dbd

    #authz configuration
Require valid-user
    #SQL query to verify a user
    #(note: DBD drivers recognise both stdio-like %s and native syntax)
AuthDBDUserPWQuery "select linux_password from employees where username
= %s AND on2admin = 'Y'"
</Directory>

At server startup. Not even with any requests to it. I will install
gdb and try it out.

At server startup or when it tries to authenticate a request?

Can you get a traceback from that? Run the server under gdb
(with the -X flag to prevent it detaching), until you get a
crash. Then you can get a backtrace from gdb. Or get a
coredump and backtrace from that.

That looks OK to me.

worker is the multi-threaded and you only need smaller number of processes
for the same amount of traffic. Each process has a bunch of threads which
share a connection pool for backend storage like mysql or ldap. The
connections in the pool can be re-used which save the cost of establishing
and destroying these connections. This is a big performance improvement if
put on a busy server.

Have you considered using --mpm=worker instead of prefork to take advantage
of the dbd has to offer?

By the way the actual error message in the error_log is
[Mon Nov 19 15:55:22 2007] [notice] child pid 21426 exit signal
Segmentation fault (11)

and after a while I see
[Mon Nov 19 15:55:22 2007] [info] server seems busy, (you may need to
increase StartServers, or Min/MaxSpareServers), spawning 32 children,
there are 1 idle, and 1 total children

Actually I have another running box that has exactly what you want to do -
httpd-2.2.6 with included apr(-utils). Here it is:

[root@stp-fe11 bin]# ldd httpd
        libssl.so.4 => /lib/libssl.so.4 (0x005b1000)
        libcrypto.so.4 => /lib/libcrypto.so.4 (0x00437000)

        libcom_err.so.2 => /lib/libcom_err.so.2 (0x0040f000)
        libk5crypto.so.3 => /usr/lib/libk5crypto.so.3 (0x00414000)
        libresolv.so.2 => /lib/libresolv.so.2 (0x001bf000)
        libaprutil-1.so.0 => /usr/local/etc/httpd/lib/libaprutil-1.so.0
(0x006ae000)
        libnsl.so.1 => /lib/libnsl.so.1 (0x003e3000)
        libm.so.6 => /lib/tls/libm.so.6 (0x00367000)
        libexpat.so.0 => /usr/lib/libexpat.so.0 (0x00111000)
        libapr-1.so.0 => /usr/local/etc/httpd/lib/libapr-1.so.0 (0x00cee000)

        libpthread.so.0 => /lib/tls/libpthread.so.0 (0x003fb000)
        libdl.so.2 => /lib/libdl.so.2 (0x00361000)

        libz.so.1 => /usr/lib/libz.so.1 (0x0038c000)
        /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x00219000)

[root@stp-fe11 lib]# ldd libaprutil-1.so.0.2.11
        libnsl.so.1 => /lib/libnsl.so.1 (0x003f7000)
        libm.so.6 => /lib/tls/libm.so.6 (0x00111000)

        librt.so.1 => /lib/tls/librt.so.1 (0x00536000)

        /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x00219000)

strangely `ldd libaprutil` doesnt show libmysql-client which I dont
understand. but the whole setup is working for me.

My database has passwords stored in linux crypt format like
$1$0.$a4M88f1CCRU80Ik6OOGEF0

Does the authentication support this? If so can someone give me an
example of a query? I am a little confused as to how the password
entered would get translated into this format in order to do the select
and compare the two values....

However I doubt this is on fact the problem.. enable full logging on your
sql server

Also can you show me the output of
/path/to/httpd -t -D DUMP_MODULES

More progress. I can now see traffic going out and coming back from the
sql server for authentication requests but they are failing some how and
I still get a seg fault when this happens. What type of "(encrypted
password)" does this support? Is there a way to set it so it
automatically succeeds just as a test? Thanks.

no he's not, if it wasnt he wouldnt be getting anywhere
at all and would not be hitting the sql server r and the errors would
be much more nasty.

I understand hes using now enable-modules-all which by default includes
dbd.

Looks like you are missing one option in your configuration: --enable-dbd

To take advantage of dbd you actually need to turn DBDPersist on and
use --with-mpm=worker configuration option. But for now try
adding --enable-dbd option first to see if it gets rid of your errors.

Daniel,

Your slackware 12, you are installing apache from source from
httpd.apache.org ? if so ls /var/log/packages/http*
if it returns a package then "removepkg httpd "

Then reinstall from source again, I have done a gazillion slackware 11 and
12's with apache2 and mysql and none have ever shown me the problem you
are having. From our previous conversations, I know you know the correct
procedure for installing it all, theres just somthing there thats
interupting it.

If none of that applies, remove all dbd global options apart from the
DBDParams, then add "DBDPersist off" and "DBDriver mysql"
and try that

the mysql-client from `ldd httpd` might be from the
option --with-mysql=/usr/lib/mysql you put when compiling.

In my working installation libmysql-client is from `ldd libaprutil-x.x`. But
I didnt use the included apr. You might try installing apr-util before hand
to see if it makes any difference for you.

I have. I do the ldd on the httpd and it shows the mysql client lib in
the list. I still get the segmentation fault as soon as I put the
DBDriver mysql command into the httpd.conf file. I have installed the
gdb but I am unsure exactly how to get it to produce the results I need.

I removed the --with-mysql and added the --enable-modules=all but I get
the same result. One thing I am unsure of is the module itself. Is it
built in or should it be building apr_dbd_mysql.so? I don't see that
any place in the build tree.

Where did you get the idea to configure like this?
--with-mysql is not an apache option, so your example that you copied is
wrong. Looks like a redhat bastardised version you may have copied.

I've always used:
configure --prefix=/usr/local/apache --enable-so --enable-modules=all
--disable-dav --with-included-apr --enable-suexec
--with-suexec-docroot=/var/www --with-suexec-caller=apache
--with-suexec-logfile=/var/log/apache/suexec_log

which works very well.

<SNIP>

Your conf file entries look good to me
