[VOTE] Tapestry 4.0-rc-1

By the time this vote ends, we'll have some kind of fix for
TAPESTRY-724. I think, with that, Tapestry 4.0 is ready for prime
time. We've already had the discussion of outstanding bugs needing
fixing. I think we should get 4.0 out the door.

Sure thing. The meat of my original issue can be found at
http://www.opensubscriber.com/message/tapestry-user@jakarta.apache.org/2056611.html.
My concern now was raised in a later message, which I forwarded from the
user list to the dev list on Nov. 22, but it mustn't have gone through
(maybe tagged as spam? It's not in gmane, anyway). I've included the
text of the original message below:

~~~
Given that HiveMind 1.1 has been released without a fix for HIVEMIND-151
(the report for the below bug), is there going to be a straightforward way
of converting meta values into other types in the T4 release?
Thanks,
Kevin
I'd really like to see something on passing meta data to HiveMind before
4.0, even if it's just a documented workaround.  I know this was brought
up as an issue with HiveMind, but given that it wasn't fixed before the
1.1 release, Tapestry users need to pay for it.
Am I just a really vocal minority?  If so, I'll sit back a bit and quiet
down a bit.  Everyone has pet issues they'd like to see taken care of.  It
just seems to me like it'd be the best way to pass off configuration data
to services and it doesn't really work.
Seeing as how Howard stated that he's going to have the bug fixed on this
item before the voting is even done, and also seeing how long these voting
things seem to last I feel comforatable with a positive position.
There is no chance that the release of Spindle for 4 will coincide
with T4. Work on Spindle for 4 will recommence once 724 is resolved.
Tools are tools. No everyone needs em. I happen to build one and since
I have a binding vote I'm exercising my right to use it.
The other commiters can override me any time they wish.
Two things.
First, based upon Howard's first message, I don't think 4.0 is going out
the door without TAPESTRY-724 being fixed.
Second, Tapestry 4 makes things considerably easier to do than in Tapestry
3.  With Tapestry 3, I found it very difficult to accomplish anything
without Spindle.  With Tapestry 4, I've managed to get by fine.  Sure,
part of that may be due to experience, but I think T4 just makes it easier
to get things done.  With simpler DTDs, I don't need to rely on Spindle to
auto-complete for me.  With optional page specs, I don't need Spindle to
help me manage all of my files.
Please don't misconstrue that to mean I don't want to see Spindle support
for Tapestry 4.  I'm sure Geoff has great things in the works and I'm all
for whatever helps improve productivity.  I'm just suggesting that the
release of Tapestry 4 need not be coincidental with the release of
"Spindle 4" (in quotes since I don't think anyone won the naming contest
;-).
I think user guides and docs can be done in the RCs cycles, right? The
RC would be mostly a code freeze.
I do think 724 should be cleared in some way before this RC, to allow
Geoff to work on Spindle for 4.0.
724 is the thorn in my side. And wouldn't you know it, I'm in a bit of
have ideas on a solution and am willing to share even if I can't load
I can't vote a +1 until 724 is resolved.
Please complete the user guide (eg form validation) before 4 final is
out. this looks bad for a serious framework.
cheers,
Ron
While I'm more than anxious to see 4.0 released...
Considering what's riding on this issue (Spindle being a major
contributor to easing Tapestry development), I'd rather hold off any
vote until the "some kind of fix" works for tooling. Not saying it
wouldn't, but I don't see how holding off the vote until then would hurt.
By the time this vote ends, we'll have some kind of fix for
TAPESTRY-724. I think, with that, Tapestry 4.0 is ready for prime
time.  We've already had the discussion of outstanding bugs needing
fixing. I think we should get 4.0 out the door.
