No Deserializer found. Can't deploy examples

I'm having trouble deploying the calculator example.

Using:
Solaris 2.8
Tomcat 3.2 (standalone)
xerces 1.3.0 (and it's at the front of my classpath).

Getting the error:

Ouch, the call failed: 
  Fault Code   = SOAP-ENV:Client
  Fault String = No Deserializer found to deserialize a 'http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/:Parameter' using encoding style ''.

I have all of the necessary jar files installed. I put the entire classpath on the command-line as an option to java as well.

Has anyone else seen this error?
