HTML Parameter Mask question

I have a test plan that looks like this:
Test Plan
- Thread Group
- - Http Cookie Manager
- - Http Request
- - - HTML Parameter Mask

I am trying to update a variable within the HTTP Request using the HTML
Parameter mask.  It is not updating my variable each time my thread loops.
Under the HTTP Request, the edited the value of the parameter to be ' * '
and under the HTML Parameter mask I have the following:
Name = [variable name]
ID Prefix =
Lower Bound = '1'
Upper Bound = '4'
increment = '1'
ID Suffix =

Any help would be great.
