maven-metadata

Does anyone know why the server seems to serve up maven-metadata.xml
when it's requested without the .xml? Ie like this:

http://people.apache.org/repo/m2-snapshot-repository/org/apache/maven/pl
ugins/maven-metadata

if it happens in the apache server only then it's a question for
repository at apache or infra
